Hi all, purchased the mom as suggested on another thread (£30 unopened off ebay thanks :))

Have been reading the rules manual which is quite well layed out for a newb like me, i thought i understood the basics, still gearing up for my first battle. In addition to the mom set i was given a dragon to paint, so my rulebook doesnt have the rules for that guy, went onto gw site:

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat500006a&prodId=prod1080191

When reading the rules it mentions a few things i dont get,

Firstly what does the R stand for in the stats? This isnt in my rulebook?

It mentions it gets double attacks at 8, is this because it can charge and knock warriors over or is this another special rule?

Fight is 7/2+ so fight 7 sounds good but as it isnt likely to start using a bow how does the 2+ work?

Thanks
Steve

Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the game! There are two LotR games: Strategy Battle Game (SBG), which is a skirmish game; and War of the Ring (WotR), which is a tray-based formation game. The stat line with the "R" in it is for WotR, you'll want the last stat line on the page, which is the SBG stat line.

Note the dragon has some special rules which are not outlined on that page. Nor are the point costs. You can get those details in the Khazad-dum sourcebook which will also explain how the dragon's 2+ shooting attack (fire breath) works. Khazad-dum also has more goblin options.

Hope that helps!

Yes it is :) http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440346a&prodId=prod1140206

Don't worry i can never find stuff on the gw site, i assume if you've got a dragon, a troll and goblins then you're gonna play as goblins. Once you're a bit more into the hobby you will need a hero to lead the goblins. The two most popular choices would be a shaman and durbuz.
A shaman is useful because of his fury spell and durbuz is useful because he has lots of might, and a big standfast and can fight quite well (provided he has lots of little goblins helping him). A popular tactic is to use both together but if you only want one i'd go for the shaman since you have a troll and a dragon to handle the fighting for you :)

Yes i thought it was too, read the description and went to click on 'buy' except there is no button!

Actually ive ended up with a bit of a mix, my mrs brought me some uruk hai which ive just finished painting so i was thinking of starting with isenguard as evil, maybe with the moria goblins as backup if they can ally. The dragons are nice models but i suspect expensive in points.

I also seem to have acquired:

Witch King on fell beast
Vault wardens
uruk hai captain and banner
fine cast version of the fellowship

so i seem to have a bit of a random selection at the moment!

i guess i should start with something there is a source book for really

Please find Kazadum on the website of my local gaming store. They have 3 left... I saw one last week so I'm pretty sure it is there.
Also they have a sale on. When you go to the checkout area type RAINY-SUMMER in the voucher area and get more money off. Normaly delivery for stuff in stock is just a few days.
Enjoy

You can view/download the profiles (points aren't given) and the special rules of the Kharzad-dum source book on this page ( along with many others). :

You can find them in Legions of Middle-earth, which as far as I know is still available.

Most GW stores still have stock of the Sourcebooks even though they're not on the website (the 4 closest to me do anyway...)

OK, so if the sourcebooks aren't available, and there are no point values on the GW website, does anyone have any suggestions how to get them? Apart from random purchases on e-bay, of course? Have they been replaced by the journey books, or are they something else?

I particularly want a SBG point value for Glorfindel, as my opponent wants to build a Balrog and I can put 750 points of Elves together relatively quickly for a "what if the Balrog gets out of Moria and goes for a walk westwards" type of battle. Dwarf values I assume are in the Khazad-Dum book.

Glorfindel is in the main rules, and has an alternate profile in the Fall of the Necromancer.

If the books are no longer available GW is either killing the product or planning an upgrade, I just hope they don't wait too long to tell us either way.

The points values for most miniatues can be found in Legions of Middle-earth!

A Balrog fighting tip: take loads of heroes so you can constantly outmaneuver it and feed it single warriors to fight, the balrog has no might and thus cannot heroic fight its way past any of your warriors. I suggest buying treebeard to hurl rocks at the balrog, doing that is pretty much the only thing good can do to wound the balrog on a 5+

Legions is out of date for a lot of profiles.
