Hi guys

I've just been reading the new Hobbit rule book again and there is no mention of volley fire  (may have overlooked it) can we still use the rules for volley fire or not?

Of course you can do what you want in your home games, but they have been removed from the rules intentionally because they detract from the skirmish nature of the game.

Which with the new setups with warbands and how close together armies now set up, volley fire isn't as useful as it used to be. Although I agree sometimes it can be useful.

Totally agree 8) would still like to have the option but I don't go to tournaments due to not having a car anymore so no big loss for me. But I will still use it as a house rule due me and my mates favourite point matches of 1500 points for normal units and 1000 for hero's/captains :D .

I don't miss it, it made the game rather boring for the sake of what? It adds so little outside of a seige game.

Agreed, I don't miss the 23 goblin archers/orc trackers standing at the back of the board ruining my fun.

Durburz
Spider Queen (back when she was 75pts)
Shadowlord on Fellbeast
1 Goblin
23 Prowlers with shield
23 Goblins with spear
23 Goblins with bow

Wow, what a grind the old game was :P

I actually do miss it lol, I've never been to a tourney and no one around here uses the warband deployment (with them being so close), it seldom came into effect in our games but as ours are always day long events we enjoyed even that lol

It seems odd to me that they keep nerfing shooting and making "the bash" all the more important. A giant clash of lines isn't as fun as flanking and outmaneuvering, but these days with bows so pitiful there isn't much choice.

I agree, but I don't think it's a problem with the rules, I think it's because there's not enough terrain on boards. If you can make a line wider than 4 to 6 models and expect to walk around the board with it in formation, you don't have enough terrain. If you can make a volley line (10 wide), and expect to move forward with it more than 1 move, you don't have enough terrain. If you're not on a raised section and you have a clear shot at more than 1/2 your opponents, you don't have enough terrain.

Have I flogged this horse enough? :)

Keep flogging mate.

I agree though. Sadly not everyone can have all that terrain. :(

B-b-but...it's so easy. I am probably the least crafty person I know, and I made these over the course of a weekend, except for painting the pond. They do the job (though I don't really like the big flat one, it was my first effort):

Ingredients are simple: a bit of mdf, some styrofoam insulation, a small amount of masonry paint (or white glue + sand would work too), and a few woodland scenics trees, then paint (lots of drybrushing, my favorite) and flock.

And if you have deep pockets, you can always order Battlefield in a Box stuff from GaleForce9...

Whafrog Is right. It is easy and can be cheep and almost free. I use a lot of natural materials.
Whafrog does not consider himself crafty but his set looks as good or better than much that is available for sale.

I would say no!

I love that terrain. I, also, am not very crafty. I never have the courage to attempt something like that!

Oh dear. Seems I got whafrag to derail the thread. Excellent little terrain though.

I was just saying dorm people can't store it all or whatever silly reasons. Sorry to pop your bubble whafrog.

The truth is that the mechanic is not needed really.
Recon it might come in but most other missions you can comfortably be within 24 inches of people from set up.

The mechanic is flawed and king of silly.

Oops! Sorry  I guess I'm kinda passionate about it, partly because I was totally intimidated by the idea when I hadn't done any, and after I'd done them I wondered what the big deal was. That and...the game is hugely better with more terrain.

And thanks for the comments, though compared to friend's works my stuff is ... lame.

Okay, I'm done hijacking this thread, I promise! :E
