Hi all, in our last battle (report in the reports section) you'll see that I had some goblins on a hill, being attacked from below by some Haradrim with spears.

We used the defending a barrier rules for the goblins, but were unsure whether or not the attackers could use spear support. We played it as a yes they could.

Obviously you couldn't use spear support while climbing, but we figured against a guy behind a wall or just up a hill you could.

Did we interpret this correctly?

I'd say yes because the rule book doesnt say something diffrent. It doesn't say a model can't be supported while attacking a defended barrier.

I can't remember the details of SBG obstacles, but basically if your models are on one side of the barrier and fighting over it, then they can be supported from the same side. I believe when you cross the barrier you are supposed to be placed immediately on the other side of the obstacle, and at that point you can no longer be supported (no longer have base contact).

........X
....ABXC
........X

A can support B as it fights against C over barrier X

........X
......AXBD
........X

Now that B has won the fight with C and crossed over and faces D (next turn, Heroic Fight, etc.), A can no longer support.

(ignore the dots...hard to get exact spacing right  )

Nice example.

are you sure?
i thought you could be supported across a barrier if both models are in-line and in base to base with the barrier

after all, if a barrier prevent base to base contact, you by the reasoning cannot attack across a barrier, only shoot.

I did say "I believe" with regard to the Support. :-D I should be able to double-check the book later this evening and confirm.

I am not saying that nor reasoning that. The rules specifically provide for fighting across a barrier. But just because you can fight across it thought doesn't automatically mean you can defend across it. You might (as I said, need to confirm in the rules) but never assume you can do Y just because you can do X.
