Hey guys, this prob sounds like a silly question but Ive just been looking through the profiles for Gondor and cannot for the life of me work out why Denethor is even an option in the rule book? Why would anyone waste points on him his special madness rule makes him a liability?????

He's dirt cheap, is a good fighter and the likelyhood of him failing a courage test is rather low, especially if you bring a warhorn.

you run the risk of him turning on your own heros and warriors though!!!!

So. Mumakil kill your own troops but are well used. Gollum in mordor too and is free, what is wrong with Denethor? better value than a trebuchet which also kills your troops.

Don't underestimate Denethor. I can say with confidence and experience that he can be and is a valuable asset to Gondor armies, especially at mid-level (500 pts) games.

He's cheap for starters, but not an independent hero. Which means plenty more warriors on the battlefield. That's an ability that's pretty rare for the good guys, one of Gondor's key benefits.

He can hold his own in a fight. The only thing that hinders his survival chances are his lack of fate, but in that case you just have to be picky on which fights you throw him into.

Though it does happen from time to time, its actually very rare that he fails his courage test. A good courage value and a decent store of will, no problem. And in the event that he does go crazy, if you've been clever with warband allocation/troop positioning then he'll be close to heavily armoured units, i.e. Guard of the Fountain Court. In regards to him attacking other heroes: why would you have him close to them anyway? There are plenty of measures like the one listed above to pre-emptively soften and negate the blow his madness will take.

People take a look at his special rule and instantly dismiss him, ignoring his statline and the fact that he's a pretty decent hero - if you know how to use him. On top of that he's a wonderful miniature who brings a certain unique character to a Gondor army.

Ally him with Erkenbrand and suddenly you get a courage 7 hero with 2 attacks at fight 5 for 30 points, not too bad...

Halbarad with Banner is another option.

Nothing wrong with Denethor, I've played several games with him and his courage didn't pop up as an issue until the last game a couple weeks back. Over the course of 7 turns he rolled: a 3 before Erkenbrand showed up; a 2 after; then Erkenbrand met his demise and he rolled a 4. He then proceeded to kill one of the fountain guards escorting him. But he was fine after that :)

No might is kinda pants, i think he should have 1 point. Dirt cheap for somebody who can look after himself in a fight is pretty good.

Why take Denethor?

Character.

If he turns on you, well it just adds to fun of the game!

It shouldn't always be about having the best list to win.

I really dont see a problem with Denethor as he has as others have stated a good stat line and for 30 pts only.
His odds of changing sides are approximatelly 4 out of 12(correct me if im wrong) and then he still has will.
Also, as rumtap said its brings more fun to the game if he does hange sides.

I've had Legolas blow his Courage Tests and flee before a smattering of remaining Goblins on more than one occasion...it's all good. If I played Gondor or Gondor allies I would very much consider Denethor for the reasons above.

Just an aside, if you still have reservations about using him, just stick him as close to the front lines as you can. He only needs to kill 3 Uruks, 5 orcs or 6 goblins to earn his points back, which shouldn't be that hard. Any kills past that, and he turns into a good investment.

Don't underestime him his is awesome for his points and I've seen people just putting another cheap hero like pipin or beregrod alongside with him when he "loses" it to stop him by making heroic move (in case evil player has priority) just to stop him from wrecking havoc among your lines
