For the purposes of an official GW tournament, what does and does not constitute a legal conversion? Can it be as little as a weapon swap? Can that weapon swap be metal rod etc. or does it need to be a GW kitbash? I'm looking at making lots of Easterling pikemen by drilling out their hands and inserting a Perry Miniatures Yari Pike.

Like so:

Would this be tournament legal?

Yes although I would shorten the pike. IMO it looks a bit big.

They're the same length as the Uruk pikes, but that's to be expected as they were sculpted by the same people. Perry twins ftw :)

Glad it's a legal conversion, may the Easterling phalanx rule!

Seeing how historical pikes (classic Macedonian sarissai) were over three times the length of the people carrying them, it looks well within plausible range.

What you can get away with, will depend on the tournament, but swapping small parts of a model (head, shield, weapon) should never be a problem.

You might need to watch using parts from an alternative manufacturer when playing at official GW tournaments or stores.

I had a friend who was told he couldn’t use 40K models because the legs were from another manufacturer.

 I was told I could not use GW miniatures in a GW store because they were too old, AKA OOP. I could say I no longer shop there. But no one shops there. They closed. Good riddance. No GW store. No official tournaments. No more problems.

I own almost every metal space ork GW ever made but they don't respect me as a customer. They don't believe that I will generate more sales. They have fulfilled their own prophecy.

For myself I've always enjoyed seeing the older or OOP's on the board with the newer models.

As much as I personally approve, G.W. are absolutely adamant that you cannot use any non G.W. miniatures or accessories in their tournaments!

The unspoken rule is the models has to be 75% GW. They arnt so strict as to not allowing metal rods for your models otherwise how would you convert anything?

I have never heard that but have regularly seen it stated that basically no parts from non G.W. miniature ranges. Naturally copper rods or basic materials such as bolsa that G.W. do not sell are not a problem.

That's fine, once it's painted no-one at official Tournies needs to know it was bought as is. It is after all, nothing more than a metal rod with a flattened end. Conceivably I could have done them all myself.

I think the pike is to long considering he is holding a shield, it would require both arms to wield that weapon

True enough, but I'm not going to try and remodel every shield to be hung around the neck like a typical Phalanx shield was. The pike itself it to scale, Sarissa were around 7 meters long (21 feet roughly).

Considering it's a game where dis-embodied invisible spirits fly pseudo-pterodactyls while commanding orcs, trolls and goblins... I'm willing to suspend disbelief that the pike looks a bit unwieldy.

Can't help out with an official answer, but I don't see what the problem is with doing them this way.

The underlying message behind a few comments about the pikes is this: You want to know if its ok/prevent anyone from having any issues with the conversions, so making it appear as similar to a standard Easterling will mean you have less people ask about it. If your opponent becomes frustrated because they are in the way or because they look out of place, you are more likely to have an issue. Of course, they should be good sports about it and you have said they are only uruk pike sized so I don't see it being a *real* issue, but the good sports who appreciates all conversions isn't the kind of person you should be concerned with, particularly at a GW tournament.
