He has been FAQ'd to have a sword, no mention of his shield though so it is ornamental
He should have the option to take it and raise his defence to 9 though. But he doesnt, maybe in the next FAQ.Hobbit FAQ

In Thror‘s profile it makes no mention of a shield and it says he has a two handed axe. He should have the option for a 5 point shield (bringing his D to 8 ) with a one handed sword? Thanks for the clarification. |

in my area we play him with defence 9 (Thrain with dwarf heavy armour is defence 8, thror just have a shield adding to that, so +1D) |
