Hey,
has anyone ever thought they knew something and then it turns out they were way of base. Yeah, apparently I am waaaaaay of base on the fight value and strength rules (I've been playing it wrong for 3 years), so what's up with fight and strength rules? Any help appreciated!

Fight is just a tie-breaker when you and your opponent roll your attack dice. If you have an orc + spear support vs elf + spear support, you each roll two dice. If the best result on both sides is, say, a 5, the elves win.

Strength is cross-indexed against Defense (handy chart at the back of the rule book) to see what number you need to wound the enemy. Eg: S3 vs D4 or D5 needs a 5 to wound, while S3 vs D6 or D7 needs a 6 to wound.

How had you been playing it then?

Hmm broad subject but I'll see what I can do.

Fight Value is pretty simple. It is only used when a combat is drawn (ie both models roll a 6). The model with the higher fight value wins. Max fight value you can have is 10. Heroes can also call a heroic strike to raise their fight by D6 (to a max of 10) which sometimes makes for interesting combats when you get two FV10 heroes duelling.

Strength is also simple. If you win said duel roll, you get to wound your opponent. Consult the wound chart at the back of the book and compare your strength to your opponents defence. Where the two meet in the table is your to wound roll (3+, 4+ etc).

Monsters can also use a brutal power attack called Rend which allows them to strike against the strength instead of defence of their enemy. So a mordor troll rending Aragorn the king would need 3+ to wound instead of 4+. (Str 7 to Str 4 = 3+ to wound whereas Str 7 to Def 7 = 4+ to wound).

Hope that all makes sense.

Thanks everyone! It turns out I was playing fight correctly, but I was way off on strength! Thanks for clarifying!

Same here, particularly as the rules seem fairly clear to me, however a different angle on strength might be interesting?

I just remember strength as being that your strength versus the same value in defense is always a 4+ and from there on up it moves in increments of +1 for every 2 jumps in defense value. Until you reach two sets of six and then I look up the additional rolls required every time.. because I'm dumb and can't remember. But know its like 6 and 2+ then 6 and 4+ and then six an 5+ as if it was a D3...

correct?
