If you have a shield, you can double your attacks and not strike if you win combat.

To expand on elronds point.

If you elect to shield, you cannot be supported by spears/ pikes.
You cannot shield while mounted.
Some warriors (namely wood elves & Guards of the galadhrim court) have rules/ wargear which allow them to shield without actually having a shield.
Thorin's Oakenshield allows him to make 1 str 4 hit if he elects to shield.
You can shield when prone (always a good idea).

If possible, I try to shield when outnumbered or when on the flank. Works well with either high defence or high fight value models as they are tough to beat.

What battle report was that? They have been known (I'm mainly looking at you thermo :P ) to get the odd rule wrong. But you cannot strike while shielding unless specified in the models profile (AKA thorin).

I think Thermo shielded with Thorin against me in one - which would be where he got the 1 S4 strike.

Also, ALL models in the fight must shield, or you can't shield. EG: If you have 1 warrior with shield and 1 with 2h axe, both in base contact with an orc, you can't shield as the guy with the axe doesn't have a shield. You must roll to fight normally.
