Post subject: | Thranduil Question |
Hello, hope you can answer a question for my friend and I? Thranduil King of Mirkwood (elf), appears in both the free people source book and the DoS book, with different stat lines and different special rules. The question is does the DoS version replace the version in the free people book? Thus meaning that you are unable to take the upgrade to Mirkwood guard shown in the free peoples book? This is fairly important regarding my friends proposed build for Throne of Skulls? Thanks for your help |

In my belief, you can use either one. Just make sure you make it clear which one you're using before hand, as to not get the rules muddled up. |

The DoS Mirkwood army list is different from the LotR Mirkwood Wood Elf list; so yes, they are two different versions of Thranduil (not a direct replacement) and the profiles are not interchangeable. It is largely dependent on the rest of your build/ the warband he is included in. If you use the upgrade, you have to use the profile from the Free Peoples sourcebook. |

If he is leading Palace Guard or Mirkwood Rangers then he is automatically equipped with the extra equipment options found in his old profile, as is included in his Mirkwood profile. |

If you take Thranduil leading new elves, then he can be 10 points cheaper as his bow and elven cloak are optional. If you take Thranduil from the free peoples book, both bow and cloak are included in his profile and cannot be removed. For example you cannot take cheap thranduil leading guards of the Galadhrim court. Hope that makes sense. |

So, do you think that old option, with list made up from free peoples would be acceptable for use in throne of skulls? |

Yeah this is a really frustrating grey area, if you go by the letter of the rules then the new profiles replace the old ones entirely so Gandalf's Cart, Gandalf the Grey's Shadowfax and the Mirkwood Guard upgrade have all been retired from the game. However, there are various conflicting bits of evidence in the FAQs that point to the old profiles still being active and acceptable. However, this is almost certainly not the intent of the rules and logic says to play it in exactly the way Southy has described. All the profiles are still active and valid but you may only take them as part of the list in the book in which they're published. That makes the most sense from a fluff point of view as well as from a GW not inexplicably removing models/options from the game POV. That's the way we ruled it in the GBHL Community FAQ so that's the way it's being played at all UK indie tournaments at the moment. However, TOS is not bound by the community FAQ so I'm not sure what their ruling would be, we ideally need a ruling before the event to prevent people accidentally taking illegal armies. Further, at TOS, if the new Thranduil replaces the old Thranduil then a Lothlorien and Mirkwood army with Thranduil would become an Allies of the Light army rather than a Free People's one no? |

Just as an update to this, one of the guys on the Facebook page has had a response from the TOS events team (that came via Games Dev.) and all the old profiles are still valid but you must use them as part of the list/book in which they appear. Great news all round really, glad to see the logical response winning out and it's good to know all the old options are still available - HUZAAH! |

This was the same enquiry regarding a conversation between myself and my friend. Glad to see we have a definative answer. He is very happy now and busy painting the army....which is a worry for my stumpy dwarves who make great bow fodder for him Thanks for all your replies, much appreciated as always and hope to put faces to user names come ToS event. |
