Post subject:  Saruman's Palantir

I was reading a battle report the other day where one side had Saruman. As I recall, they were using a rule which allowed Saruman to use the Palantir and cast a Magical power even if the target wasn't in Saruman's line of sight. I also recall reading something similar in one of the battle games magazines.

Is this an official rule/was there one? As far as I know, it may have been an old and removed rule from long before I joined the game. Some of you who joined the game when it came out may know.

While on this thought: what other rules could represent the Palantir's power?

Cheers,

It must have been a scenario specific rule, because the palantir has 1 ability. Once per game you may win priority without rolling. That's it. The palantir has no other abilities in vanilla lotr sbg

That is not entirely true:

I think there must have been one, but there is no more.
I think I've read it in the old rulebook, the first rulebook to be precice (as it is lying in front of me now) or something: This one: The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring.
A Strategy Battle Game.

But the rule, as it is explained in this old book, says this rule only works for sorcerous blast.

It used to be allowed either in the original Two Towers Rulebook or the ROTK core rulebook. I cannot remember which

That was the original rule for the Palantir, if I remember correctly.

Radagast can still fire without line of sight. He has that master of birds rule. At least lotr radagast does. I don't know about hobbit radagast.

It was in the Two Towers rule book where, with the palantir, Saruman was able to cast sorcerous blast from anywhere on the board without actually being there. Given that it was the original 'Last March of the Ents' scenario, this ability was a little bit op.

The original rule (FOTR & TTT) was that he could use Sorcerous blast with unlimited range as long as he had 1 will point left.
For ROTK he had his other powers buffed (easier to cast), gained voice of command (stand fast range doubled) but was not able to use SB with the Palantir anymore.

Saruman was ridiculously over powered in the first edition of the rules being able to cast spells through the palantir to anywhere on the board, this included Sorcerous blast. His abilities were gradually tuned down over the next two film linked editions and finally balanced out in the "One Ring" version of the rules.
