Hello

The Dwimmerlaiks special rule Sap Fortitude states that:

Quote:
Whenever an enemy Hero spends a point of Might, Will or Fate within 12" of the Dwimmerlaik, roll a D6. On a 4 or more, an extra point (of the same type) must be spent, or the deed is cancelled and does not take effect, and Might, Will or Fate already committed to it is lost

The Will of Evil states:

Quote:
During the game, this model must give up 1 point of Will at the end of the Fight phase if it has been in a fight.

Does Sap Fortitude affect The Will of Evil? So any Ringwraith affected must give up 2 Will each Fight? Or does Sap Fortitude only affect times when you have choice to do an action with M/W/F?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

The wording of the rules implies no. Sap fortitude states when they spend a point of will, whereas will of evil says give up a point of will.

That said, it could probably be played either way.

I lean towards no because they are not choosing to use the point of will for something. They don't declare they are charging into combat and spending a point of will to do it; they are going into combat, then losing a point of will as a result.

It's certainly slightly ambiguously worded but I think the intent of the rule is pretty clear. The Will of Evil rule is a latent special ability that the wraith can do nothing about, Sap Fortitude is designed to counter models choosing to use M/W/F.

In short, no, the wraith should not have to give up 2 points of Will after a Fight.

That was my view as well. Although, I would base the argument in the wording, rather than the intent. The intent of the rule is closely linked with the intent of the author, and is hard to tell for certain in ambigous cases. But here the wording makes a difference between the two rules. Sap Fortitude also has the ability to cancel the action, this is different from Will of Evil.

I really appreciate the question. I never would have thought about it, but I might run into this a lot at an upcoming tournament.

I think that the words "give up" are different enough in meaning from "spend" that the SF doesn't cause 2 points of Will to be spent. As said before, spending is a conscious choice, whereas giving up is involuntary.
