Faction: Misty Mountains, 1.0

A plague of Goblinkind has infested the Misty Mountains for countless millennia. Like a dirty
tide, the goblins and their monstrous allies pour out of dark holes and crevasses to wreak death
and destruction on any who dares to venture too close to their lairs.

Special Rules
Shaman -- The Hero has begun to learn powerful incantations that spur his warband to fight
through the most grievous wounds and paralyze his enemies with fear. The first time this rule is
chosen, the hero gains the Fury magical power (as detailed in the main rulebook), that is cast on
a 3+ and has a range of 6”. The second time, the hero gains the Transfix magical power which
is cast on a 5+ and has a range of 12”.

Monstrous Bulk (Wargs and Spiders only) -- The creature has survived countless battles and
feasted on the bodies of numerous slain foes, growing to a monstrous size. The sheer weight
and impetus of its attack will often bowl the enemy to the ground. The model is treated as a
Cavalry model when working out the effects of charges.

**A note about Misty Mountains Battle Companies**
Because of the swarming nature of goblins and their allies, the maximum number of warriors/creatures in a Misty Mountains Battle Company is 20.

**A note about Wargs and Spiders**
Though cunning creatures, Wargs and Spiders have no grasp of tactics or leadership. As such,
only creatures of their own species may benefit from their Stand Fast! rolls or benefit from their
heroic actions.

---------------------

This is what I've put together so far. I went a radically different direction with the Goblins as one of my buddies always complained that they were boring to play in extended BC campaigns. Rather than giving them greater numbers (the 20 warrior limit), I've given them access to some more elite/different troops in the Prowlers, Wargs and Spiders. I have left the Gundabad Black Shields out for now because, to be honest, I haven't seen their SBG stats, so I don't know how balanced they are. I also debated giving them a third special rule, since the one can only be used by Wargs and Spiders, but decided to stick with two for now. Let me know what you think.

i think the most important thing is figuring out the best way to incorporate a cave troll into the battle company.
ie. when should it become available? does it cost influence? is it an upgrade? Or do you trade goblin ability for greater numbers for troll?

I agree that we need a way to incorporate trolls into BCs. Rather than incorporating them directly into the BC, which would be difficult to balance, I think they should be more like a mercenary-type unit that can be "hired" with Influence Points.

I, personally, prefer numbers with gobbo armies as it's what makes them special.
I don't even have any prowlers, just a hundred gobs, some trolls and a few spiders, bats and wargs.
When you think gobs you think numbers + troll, though The Hobbit may shift from troll to wargs I think numbers are important.
Just my opinion.

After taking another look at it, I think that you are right, simmuskhan. I am going to put the 20 member rule back in there. Even with the added benefit of more elite troops, the goblins just NEED to have numbers.

Will there be an upgrade option for Gundabad blackshields?

Post subject:  Re: [BCUpdate} Faction: Misty Mountains

I had left the Blackshields out because I don't have access to their SBG profile. If they are not overpowered and fit with the theme of a roving warband, then I see no reason why they couldn't be included.

The blackshields have strength four and defence six, so in a BC they could be pretty strong. Maybe have a goblin prowler w/ shield promote to Blackshield w/ shield.
and prowler w/ 2-weapon promote to blackshield with spear, and shield.

I know that in BC's it's rare for anyone to last for too long, the chances of someone getting promoted twice is rare, but blackshields are better than Womt.

That sounds like a good idea. I'll add the Blackshields now.

Throwing Weapon (Prowler only)................1 Inf.

Don't prowlers come with throwing weapons as standard?

Again great work with these Battle Company thread Jonathan. I hope you don't mind, but when updating my LOTR SBG Resource List thread I have linked to all of your Battle Company threads in the BC section as I find they are valuable resources.

Thanks, Jake. I really enjoyed working on them, and I’m honored that you considered them worthy of being included. I’m planning on eventually compiling all of them together with some extra material that I’m working on (scenarios, etc.) into a big .pdf file that people can download/print for use. When that is finished, I was hoping that we could perhaps host it here on the OR as a resource for all the players.

Isn't this missing an advance table?

Never mind, just read your battle companies rules.
