Post subject: | New units Value |
This topic had probably already been asked so feel free to post a link to that conversation id it does but I was just wondering how people thought about the stats for the new units, I'm returning from a hiatus away from the hobby so have none of the new book but have downloaded and studied the free Heroes and Villains profile thing GW has on their website and I'm interested in how some of the profiles play in game Azog- seems ok but D5 and F1 for his points seems a little low, is it as much of a problem in game as it looks on paper Thorin - looks great for 115 with the orcrist and the oakenshield Dwalin - little cheaper and a little worse but looks good for his price, I can see him and Thorin being mainstays of Dwarf armies and allies in the future they both reasonably priced, have good stats and nice special rules (Gloin could also be placed here I suppose) Bofar and Nori - Seem like quite a nice halfway between a captain and the stack of 'Mega' heroes that the dwarves have, I can see these two being used a lot as there only a little more expensive than a captain of Erebor and have some nice rules without being the powerhouses of Thorin, Thrain and Thror (the line of Durin apparently really like to start names with 'Th') The other dwarves - either seem like nothing special but for a nothing special price (Fili and Kili) kinda pointless (Dori) or only helpful in certain circumstances so only in certain army lists but with some definitely interesting opportunities Oin's healing and Ori's MWF regeneration come to mind. Radagast - same stats but new additions Sebastian silly addition but for 5 points might kill an Orc a game so could be worth it (and it's kind of a sweet little addition and I actually quite like that they put it in). The sled on the other hand has lots of attacks but low defence, strength and a high price seem pointless Lindir - like Sebastian glad he's included but not sold on his usefulness +1A would have been nice for his price (as your going to want to give him heavy armour), would make a good combo for Elrond in larger games as I feel was GW plan. Would be nice to know how good his resistant to magic rule is if not played with Elrond, perhaps against a wraith/Shaman heavy army he would be worth his points. Thrain and Thror - unsurprisingly very similar, decent base stats for their price on paper Thrain is probably better, fearless is a bit rubbish and the Arkenstone makes up for Thror lack of fate but Thrain's standfast is really nice even if blood feud has limited use. TBH I can't see why you would take Thorin or Dwalin and some more dwarves personally Fimbul and Narzag - seem good for their price nothing amazing but then your not paying an amazing price either (like a lot of the dwarf company) Bolg - his price is quite high but decent stats and a nice cumulative rule seems good it obviously requires Bolg to kill a bunch of people until he is at full power though. Against Rohan or red vs red I can see him being a truly devastating force but against elite armies like elves and dwarves he may have trouble killing ten khazad guard and the high fight and defence hero that will be pointed straight in his direction. Trolls - story and scenario wise great, love the models but I can't see them being used in army lists so I'll move on Goblin King - ok stats for his price I suppose others have much better, special rules are quite nice though make him resistant to most things but only F1 is irritating (this seems to be a running theme with these new hobbit guys). Throw Goblin is nice but it obviously costs you a goblin and +5 to hit isn't great. I imagine him as a a troop slayer his strength, attacks and wound dodging ability make me think he'd be great mowing down low defence troops with impunity but I can't see him standing up to Aragorn or particularly Thorin for to long before it takes it's toll. Grinnah - just seems like a slightly improved named goblin captain - nothing special but definitely will be used a lot because of his low price and 3 might Scibe - seems useful but really depends on how you roll also one good shot and it's gone So guys and girls what new models do you think are worth it and which will fall by the wayside?? |

The only members of the company who can lead troops are Dwalin, Balin, and Thorin, so while Nori, Dori etc are great they will rarely be seen in actual armies. In response to your question though; I love the new profiles, Thorins Company have far more advanced and synergetic profiles than anything else in the game, making them great fun to play. Azog is terrifying but way too easy to kill, the new Gollum is an absolute beast, and the Goblin King is just epic, he has taken 40+ wounds without dying in the past Hunter Orcs are great as well, alot of people think them overpowered but the d4/f3 really screws them over. |

Also Sebastian may be the most under costed upgrade in the game. It's not much use for killing BUT suddenly Radagast has 2 attacks in CQC. That's huge for survivability |

The Goblin King is a beast btw! 3 layers of saves potentially. Blubber, Fury, and Fate! That's amazing. Thorin's company have far more worth than you're giving credit for, they're cheaper than captains and provide various advantages in game. Dori is a 3 attack hero which is very nice at his points. Sure they're all basically "independent" heroes but they bring so much to Dwarf armies in terms of much needed flexibility |

That's true I think I underestimated the Goblin King. Would anybody mind doing a little write of the 13 dwarfs please |

Am I the only one who thinks the profiles for Thrain and Thror are a little underwhelming, not bad just underwhelming, yeah there base stats are great D8 and 3 everywhere you want them (apart from Thror's fate) but there specials abilities aren't great Thror - Fearless - he's high courage anyway, Arkenstones nice (really nice) but roll a 1-3 on your first fate save and bye bye ability Thrain - stand fast is nice given his courage but blood feud is way to precise to have any real application (though it will inevitable get used a lot in the near future because of Azog thematic role in the movies) any non Dol Guldur army likely won't use him so this power is wasted. Compare them to Thorin who with upgrades in is still 25 cheaper has a nice offensive shielding rule and widely applicable D3 rule. In short you are paying a Glorfindel, Aragorn, the 3 wizzards, Gothmog or Prince Imrahil price for them how do you think they stack up against them |
