Hi folks, over last few weeks I have been making progress on a Corsairs of Umbar themed ship.
This originally started off as a quickie for my young son to play with his toy soldiers [caesar fantasy range 1/72] with after he saw the ships on Battle for MiddleEarth II for PC.
But it kinda grew and will probably see service in a SBG LOTR game, once I get the corsair crew painted up.
I used the guide in one of the BgiME magazines, as a basis to work from.

The ship is about 30cm long (deck area), and 12 cm wide.

I hope these pics work, I am still not very good with these forum-thingies!

If they do, I'll keep you updated with progress.
Hope you like it.

Cheers

update 28/9/9 - picture with added orc for figure scale as requested

sorry I have not got much further with this, I got distracted by another project:
http://www.one-ring.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=181166#181166

update 3/10/9
a few more pics of progress, have added deck grills, redesigned rudder, added side plating & "kite shield" shapes. Added stern Sauron style hull spikes...

Update 10/10/9
Fixed the whoopsie of my upside down kite shield hull armour. Made and added Anchor, and its rope. Tried several ways to make a steering wheel for ship out of balsa and dowel, but I wasn't satisfied with any of the attempts so I went to local model shop and bought a one for NZ$7.

So that is the ships manufacturing complete. Just got to paint it now.

update 30/11/9 - have base coated ship now: Dark brown for wooden hull and structures, black for sails. Its getting there slowly...

update 8/12/9 - a picture of first coat of paint, brown for hull, and black for sail. More work to go...
Image

Finally got round to finishing this project today. Main thing was tidying up the basecoat, adding a weathered-look to the wood, dry brushing the sails slightly, and doing the rusted metal effect on hull armour plates and anchor.

Hope you like it.

Sorry, i have just read the guidelines on posting pics and about it being 640.
Erm, I am not quite sure how to resize image [i just used the link thing on photobucket], but if the administrator can do so on my behalf I would appreciate it. I don't wish to cause problems.
If it is a problem, i understand if this post /thread is deleted.

Looking pretty sweet.

As for resizing your pics.

Download some photo editing software like the gimp - linky and just select your picture, right click, and select Edit with GIMP. Then, select the scalpel icon, click and drag over the part of the picture you want to keep, hit return, then go to Image> Scale Image> and select the width, change it to somewhere between 600-640, and the height will adjust accordingly.

Then close the picture. Save it at both prompts, and upload to your hosting site.

Job done.

A very interesting ship-plenty of deskspace for scurvy sea-dogs (Arrr!) very appropriate, what, with this being International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
I would suggest adding some suitably Corsairy accessories, like PaulF included in his vessel:

Looking very neat! This might work as inspiration for my brother who is collecting an Umbar army. 8)

Really fantastic work there. The Corsair's ships are such a nice project, it is always nice to se someone begin construction on one. :)

Any chance you could take a pic with a mini alongside it to show the size? :)

firstly, thanks to all the positive remarks.

Thanks also to the person who re-sized the pictures[and saved me getting in trouble!], I'll try and figure it out myself next time.

Yes I will try and post a pic with a figure, for scale.
Yes I plan to add many embellishments, like rusty iron kite shaped shields down the sides, tattered flags and pennants, and a loads of crates, barrels etc.

Cheers

Work progresses on the ship, I have redesigned the rudder, added a metal tail effect to stern of ship, and two spikey "wings" to rear flanks of ship (both to mimic the actual movie ships). I have also added two deck grills, allowing access to hold below.

looking ahead, i plan to adorn the deck with barrels and crates. I know these can be purchased from model suppliers, but was aware there was an article in one of the BGIME mags about this. Can anyone provide a link or offer any tips on their construction?

Cheers

This WiP reminde me of Revolutionary's Umbar (Link 1), (Link 2),and his own Corsair ship (his is about 4th from the top on Grimhelm's Ports of Pelargir site.).

If these links are in anyway helpful, You're Welcome. :), and no, I'm not advertising. :-D

It looks great! All you have to do now is give it a more ragged look... didn't the ones in the movie have these shield type things covering the sides?

Just finished adding these, as you suggest. I only have to add an anchor and steering wheel.

Games Workshop have some pictures in the War of the Ring Rulebook in the battle scenario sections (Peleigar (Spelling) and Minas Tirith). Those should help you with the colour scheme.
