Thanks for the kind words guys, it's heartening to hear that you like a model I wasn't that happy with - very much appreciated!

@theavernger001 - Yep, that's the one, I've spent the year gathering them up and getting some good deals, I've currently got 21 sprues and the average cost has been £2.60 per sprue. Much better than the £12 per sprue GW want! My hope is to build a massive goblin town board sometime next year, it's a long term goal but hopefully it'll be done by Christmas 2014. Obviously I'll keep you guys appraised as and when I get cracking!

Got a few updates coming this week, I've finished painting mounted Fimbul and Bombur, just need to finish their bases tonight and snap some photos tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get them uploaded tomorrow afternoon but if not it might be on Monday. Pretty happy with how they turned out, Bombur more so than Fimbul.

So I then started thinking about my next model, as I mentioned above I'm planning on running a modded Hobbit scenario on Sunday (recreating the scene where Fimbul and Yazneg chase the company to Rivendell) and I decided I couldn't play a Hobbit scenario without a Hobbit so I got cracking on Bilbo!

There was also a selfish part of me that wanted to paint a cool model that I really wanted to paint after struggling through both Yazneg and Fimbul and this fantastic Bilbo sculpt fit the bill nicely.

This was one of those really divisive sculpts when it was released but I absolutely love it, it's great to get a really dynamic Hobbit pose and it's models like this that are only possible thanks to Finecast and, despite the cost, that's gotta be a good thing.

However, as you may have noticed it wasn't quite perfect. The Sting on this sculpt is comically big, more like a Warhammer weapon (it's genuinely nearly twice as wide as other sculpts) and it looked really stupid. Thankfully I had the perfect replacement, I'd assembled my Goblin Town Bilbo with a walking stick so I used the sting hand from that model instead. It was an easy conversion that really improved the model.

Secondly, upon gluing the tree stump down I was disappointed, if you look at the model on GW's website, Bilbo's actually facing the floor and you can't see his face - not great. A few minutes of tinkering later and I'd tilted the tree stump backwards and shoved a bunch of sprue offcuts underneath, a little green stuffing later and the reposing was finished for what amounts to, IMO, a much better result.

They were two small conversions that made a big difference to the overall look of the model and as a nice bonus he met the criteria for this month's painting challenge so I've entered him into that. I've actually been painting Bilbo this week and he's coming along nicely, he still needs a bit of work but hopefully I'll have pics of the finished result up early next week.

So, as was perhaps inevitable, the weekend got away from me, but here's Fimbul and Bombur.

As has been well documented I didn't really enjoy painting Fimbul, I don't think I painted enough contrast between his skin, clothes and bone armour so he ends up looking like a bit of a brown mess. Still, he works well enough for my needs.

As I may have mentioned I went really overboard with Yazneg's warg and hand painted each piece of fur individually with three colours, it took me absolutely ages but I was really pleased with the result. However, by the time I got to Fimbul I really couldn't be bothered and resorted to the age old technique of drybrushing his fur and to be honest I was really pleased with how it turned out. I've snapped a picture of them side by side below and I really don't think you can tell the difference. Even if you can, I imagine the fur on Yazneg's warg took me about 2 hours longer than the fur on Fimbul's and I certainly don't think Yazneg's looks 2 hours better if that makes sense? I'd be really curious to hear your thoughts on this.

Ultimately I think I prefer the darker scheme of Fmbul's Warg but I prefer the paint sheme of Yazneg to Fimbul. I guess in a perfect world I'd like to have Yazneg on Fimbul's warg! :-)

Ah well, at least they're done now, I don't mean to sound flippant but I'm exclusively painting these guys up to use in Hobbit scenarios, I've got no plans/desire to build a Hunter Orc army, I think this goes someway to explaining by displeasure painting them and the fact that I'm not all that bothered they didn't turn out perfectly.

However, I am much, MUCH, happier with Bombur!

I wasn't originally all that excited about painting Bombur as I wasn't that keen on the figure, I was primarily painting him to help in games due to the buff he gives Oin, Balin and Gandalf. However, as soon as I got stuck in I really fell in love with him, his fact is fantastically characterful and I'm really pleased with the way he looks like he's frowning. I loved the detail on the beard too, that was really good fun to pick up, here I definitely feel there was a benefit to painting the hair individually rather than dry-brushing.

So yeah, thoroughly chuffed with that one - hope you like!

Work continues apace on Bilbo, I've decided to add more stuff to his base (it is a scenic base contest after all!) which has delayed him a bit, not sure quite when he'll be done but I would certainly hope to have picks up by the end of the week.

I have to say, that Fimbul looks so much better than Yazneg.. there's something that really bothers me about the pose of Yazneg. The paintjobs however are superbe and so is Bombur! Very life-like

And I'm back already with another update, dunno what's come over me!

I managed to get Bilbo finished last night and snapped a few pics this morning, as I mentioned I've swapped his Sting hand for the one from EFGT and the whole model's been tilted back so you can see his face clearly. So, without further ado - here he is!

I REALLY enjoyed painting this figure, it's a great pose with some wonderful detail and was a lot of fun to do. I must say though some of the detail is really confusing, not sure what the things that look like Nuclear Warheads on his back are meant to be but I guessed at bottles. There's also a bunch of rope/straps crossing the model that can be hard to identify. However the trickiest part were the two triangles you can see under his chin in the first photo (the left one's green and the right one's red) it took me absolutely ages to work out what these were meant to be and I painted them 4 times before I settled (scarf, shirt and jacket, scarf again, shirt and jacket again!) and I'm still not entirely sure I got it right! :-)

It didn't help that due to the downward looking pose on the original model you can't see that part on GW's site! Also, I couldn't find any examples of this model painted on the internet, a rare experience!

You should notice there's a bit more going on on the base than in the undercoated model, this is my entry for this month's painting contest which has to include a scenic base or NMM. I had a spare LE Radagast base left over from when I converted him to be mounted so cut that up and was able to fit 3 of the logs and the other spider on quite well. It took me a while to trim away all the excess base plastic (particularly on the spider) but I'm really happy with how it turned out. I also took this chance to experiment with some tufts and leaves I bought at SELWG at the weekend. I've never used this kind of stuff before and I found it quite difficult to work with although I'm very happy with the finished result.

This was also my first attempt at NMM (figured I'd try and hit both categories!) and I'm fairly pleased with the way it turned out. I find myself in the strange postition of having finished my Hobby Challenge entry 2 weeks in advance and whilst I think he's finished I'd be willing to revisit Sting if anyone has any tips or suggestions for improvement.

Overall though I'm really happy with him, lovely centrepiece model for the company.

Next up I'm taking a short but necessary break from painting Hobbit figs to get the filthy Worm painted up as I'm hoping to take him to a tourney next weekend. As ever it'll probably take longer than I think but I'd hope to have pics up by early next week.

Great work on Fimbul and Yazneg and converted Bilbo looks great. What are the leaves on the base? I'm doing an autumn woodland board and they would fit perfectly.

@hannanibal - the tufts and leaves are by miniNatur. I picked them up at a recent games show. The tufts with the leaves are 'Tufts with leafs late fall' and the leaves wrapped around the branch are 'oak foliage late fall'. They have a huge range, I'm sure there's loads of online suppliers but this is some of their stuff:

Good to hear from you buddy, and thanks for the overly generous comment, it's very much appreciated - looking forward to catching up over the weekend.

So I managed to get Worm done in time for this weekend's Preston tournament - I was painting till 2:30 this morning but got there in the end. He's not my best work, I find it quite hard to paint black (after a few highlights everything ends up looking grey) and trying to make a contrast between his black hair and black cloak was quite tricky but I'm actually pretty pleased with how he turned out. He didn't take long either which was nice as I was painting him more out of need for the tourney than a desperate desire to paint the figure. It's quite a hard figure to photograph as it's basically a small, low, black lump but hopefully you get the idea!

I'll let you know how he and his friends get on over the weekend in one of my typically long-winded tourney reports sometime next week.

Next on the painting table is Kili who has been base-coated and neglected for the last two months. He's not the next dwarf I want on the gaming table but I'm going to try and paint my remaining dwarves for November's Warband challenge and I need to keep them at the undercoat stage until I can snap a proof-picture in a week's time. Hopefully I'll be able to sneak in a few hours on Kili next week and get him done before the challenge kicks off.

Thanks guys, much appreciated, just back from an intense weekend of gaming in Preston where Worm made his debut, I should have a report written up by the end of the week to show how he got on!

@ Elflover - thanks, I hadn't forgotten but I'm still not 100% satisfied with Sting so I'm planning to do a little more work on that and then take some new photos this week. Thanks for the reminder though, I'm really pleased with him and I'd hate to forget to enter him! :-)
