The end of phase 1 for my Fallen Dwarves!

I'm kind of wishing I'd gone for drybrushing the metallic instead of fine lining it all by hand (takes ages and it's kind of inconsistent, depending on how tired I was at the time of painting.)

8 Spears, 8 Axes, 4 Crossbows, 2 Dragon Fire teams and various characters.

Now I need to put these away in a box and forget about them for a few weeks. I'm not really satisfied with them but a little break will make them grow on me.

Army shot once I get some terrain organised...

I have been looking a this topic for quite a while now and it has really drawn my attention. i love the fallen dwarves and have recently purchased some and got to work assembling. i cant wait to see what you have up your sleeve for other lord of the rings themed miniatures. its nice to see that someone is making an active effort to add miniatures to the Tolkien/SBG universe (maybe more so than games workshop is at the moment). i can definatley see myself returning to miniatures of the north to buy more lord of the rings themed models for my already too big collection!!

The way I photograph miniatures is surprisingly basic! I'd recommend investing in some proper equipment you can usually find stuff on ebay for a reasonable price.

Image

Set up:

    Light tent
3 points of light (I got the two smaller lights on tripods with my light tent)
Daylight bulbs (this helps you get a pure white background)

Technique:

    Photograph using the Macro function
In an editor (whatever you have on your laptop, windows live photo gallery is fine) ramp up the brightness to maximum.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

I'm not technically sculpting LOTR but I'm definitely making miniatures that will fit in with the scale and the overall style!

Hi MOTN,

Thank you very much for a picture and explanation of your photo setup, I already wanted to ask as well. Very helpful, I've right away tried it out yesterday!

The dwarves look great again, every accent was worth the effort! 8) I especially like the armour, very well done!

Cheers,
Bennet

Great photo setup, problem is i always spend all my "hobby money" on figures not equipment, no self control.

These are looking super, what miniatures are they?

You could add some sort of light green wash to the dragon heads as your bronze or copper will usually oxidize when it is left with water after an amount of time. A good example is the Statue of Liberty which would have been a golden colour at first. If your heads are gold however then skip what I mention. Otherwise they are looking pretty darn good.

I've set up a similar set up, but bought some daylight bulbs and lamps, and then made the light box from a few citadel tree boxes stuck together with some laminating pouches stuck on :)

Outstanding miniatures :yay: :yay: I bought the Fallen Dwarf army deal from Anvil. Just finished painting the crossbows (can see here http://www.one-ring.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=26624). They don't look anywhere near as good as yours. The metallic fine lining must have taken ages!

I'll get your Fallen dwarf leaders one day. Thanks for making such awesome minis!

Jaw. Drops.

Those dwarves are absolutely stunning! Awesome work buddy, can't wait to see what you come up with next, think I may have found myself a new favourite thread!

Keep up the great work!

LOTR is definitely an Autumn/Winter thing for me, I just went through this blog to recap and notice I'm least productive and active spring and summer! (Incidentally I first read LOTR in the winter and the movies all come out in December...)

So listening to the fellowship audiobook on a grim October day I head back to Middle Earth and started work on some Galadhrim cavalry:

Love these, the red glazing looks great. Contrast looks too notch, if anything I think you could have pushed the shading to black a little more.
