lol kk :-D Btw, sorry for not having updates... I've been pretty busy. I'll be sure to take pics of the 3 pillars right before I prime em though :) Hopefully that'll be in a few days at the latest...

Ok... well I guess those few days turned out to be exactly a month! End of school work has really taken a lot of my time off hobbying, but I've finally gotten some time to actually work on my diorama! I have a long weekend, and so I hope that I'll get quite a bit of work done and get back on schedule...

Here are the 4 pillars. All I have to do now for the 3 unfinished ones is paint some glue into the cracks, prime em, and paint em!
...If you're wondering why I must paint glue into the cracks, it is because the aerosols of my spray paint will melt uncovered polystyrene. I tested it on some scraps, and they melted immediately. Thanks gaarew for the heads up!

Image

Okay, so what I hope to accomplish this weekend is:
1. Cover all uncovered polystyrene with glue.
2. Prime pillars
3. Paint pillars.
4. Finish carving floor of tower
5. Paint floor of tower
6. Paint woodpile
7. Sculpt the hanging bowl (wth is in this anyway? Water or flammable liquid?)
(and possibly) 8. Start working on roof.

I think this is a very achievable goal, as I can easily multitask... what do you think?

I also just made a trade with Bram (Gondolin) for a Pippin which I can easily convert, so hopefully I'll get that within the next week and be able to get started on him! I'm going to have to add a scarf, and switch his sword with a torch (which I still have to sculpt). I'm using the FotR Merry for this, and already have a photo of him right before the beacon scene, so I have an idea of the clothing colors and everything. I'll post that picture up along with the WiP conversion of Pip once I receive him.

And also:

TheBucklandBrewer wrote:
Back in those days I build it, I considered doing the wooden pulley but I could't check into detail close enough to figure out what the hell it was... I couldn't cap screenshots yet so I had to use what I could find on the net or using the pause-key and trying to sketch it or taking a photo of my tv, lol..; of course that didn't really help a lot.

The inspiration pics are actually photos I took of the screne while the movie was paused lol

As usual, all C&C highly appreciated!

Later guys,

RoG (Jul)

Hey RoG

That looks good so far. I would make one of Pippin climbing down. It would look really good with the fire. But thats just my oppinion so you do what you think!

Hza

Well I was also leaning towards that but my skills aren't super good so I wouldn't want to ruin the piece by painting the fire wrong or messing up on the light reflection on the pillars. But if I do decide to change my mind later on, it'll be easily modifiable (is that the word?) as I'd just have to remove the Pippin from the top of the woodpile and add a (cotton?) fire...
After all, this IS my first real construction (not counting a crappy tower and tree I built a while ago...)

Well I plan to do it in 2 parts:
-The beacon and part of the bridge
-The guard hut in the mountain and the rest of the bridge

I'm not sure, but if this proves to be successful, I might make an article about it :) What do you guys think?

Btw, UPDATES:

-Primed the woodpile
-Made the waterbowl(?) out of ProCreate

Okay, I guess it's time to update this thread... I haven't made much progress on the beacon, although I started a few other projects...

This is one I've been working on for a while, a hand-made battlecry trebuchet:

Image

It is done, and I primed it a few minutes ago. Hopefully I'll paint it tomorrow...

How do you guys like it? All C&C is obviously appreciated :)

I like it :D It looks cool. Although there is one little thing, the bag, in which the stone is hanging, shouldn't have a "empty" space under the stone. I suppose the stone would be so heavy so it would be at the bottom of the bag.

Get ready for killing some creeps!

Hey, Ranger of Gondor!

That trebuchet is amazing! I can just imagine it on the battlefield, it'll look fantastic. Have you painted it yet? If you have get the pictures up soon, I can't wait. :-D

The Beacon is great too, especially the woodpile. It'll be great to see all these projects completed! :)

Thanks for the comments guys...

Ok here's the trebuchet ATM:

Image

Ignore the stone, it is being reworked... What I really need though is criticism on the wood and the metal. The metal parts I find are ATM absolutely horrendous. How should I improve it? And as for the wood, how does it look, and how can I improve it? The following pic is a closeup of the woodwork:

Image

Please note that the accurate color is that of the first pic... idk why but it is a little distorted here :)

And last question, how should I paint the ropes?

Image

Please be harsh! At this point, all I want it constructive criticism, and the opportunity to improve my painting as well as construction skills...

Thanks guys, :)

Julian

How to I be harsh with something as well made and painted as that!?!?!

wowee.

if i must say something. I would say, now try drybrushing the wood lightly with bleached bone for a nice highlighted finish. not too much paint though.

Great work Julian! That trebuchet looks fantastic! :yay:

I would agree with Corsair though that the wood could do with a drybrush of Bleached Bone, other than that it's amazing! 8)

Keep up the great work!

Jul, you HAVE to write an article about building one of those, it's fantastic!

You could improve the wood by lightly drybrush it with either Bleached Bone or Rotting Flesh.

Gee thanks guys! :-D Like I told Corsair, this was just a test-run for a friend. I was planning on making an improved trebuchet, for which I would definetly make an article... so expect one soon 8)
Although sadly my questions haven't been answered... how should I paint the ropes?

Also, a sneakpeek at my next project, which I've been researching and will start after the awards... an Avenger Bolt Thrower :-D
