Thanks for the response and the feedback. I will now be working on the base and will post again when that is progressed far enough.

In the mean time if anyone does have any ideas or observations then I would be grateful to hear from you.

Cheers

Mally (Gandlaf)

It would be neat if you could have a rider and his horse suspended in the air as if they had just been hit by the mumak. You could drill a small hole in the horse's foot and in the base and connect them with a piece of wire so it looks something like this.

Good idea!
Or you could connect part of the horse to the edge of the mumaks tusk. It will looking like they are flying through the air but still in contact with the swinging tusk. Then there would be no wire sticking up.

Well it's been a while but I've got the next set of dead done. I've spent more time over these trying to develop the techniques I was told about on my thread 'going up a level'. Hopefully you will see some difference in quality...

The photo hasn't quite picked out the highlights that I assure you are there, though I think I could do with another touch on the highest areas.
Comments good and bad please

Fantastic, and I like how the ground looks like it is soaked in blood! :yay:

Great job. :D , I agree with bilbo, the ground looks really neat and blood stained, just like it should after all that slaughter.

Great to see you back and working on this, Gandlaf! I love the horse especially, the highlights look fantastic! Can't wait to see more progress on this project. 8)

Ermm I don't wish to offend but the ground is just a basecoat of Scorched Brown. The work on that will commence once I set the figures into the base.
Then I will add the blood etc.

Thanks again
I'm working on the lastset of figures at present, then they will all be set in the base with the grass etc.

Next up though is any suggestions for the blood. I've had a thought to keep it looking fresh.

After I've coated everything with Testors to seal it I was going to base with Red Gore and work this up a bit. Finally mixing Blood red with clear varnish to keep it shiny and looking fresh.
I know I could add the varnish after, but my theory is mixing it in together will produce a tougher and deeper finish. After all I want this peice to last and stand the test and rigours of time.

if i was you i wouldnt use straight reds if you look at blood when its spread all over the place, its a brownish red not a "blood red" ive found that using brown ink with some blood red on a toothbrush flicking it over is a good way to go
hope this helps

Have a look at the blood on GildorPL's twins' sword. He kindly posted how he did it as well. link

Thanks for the link for Gildor.
Ironically PVA was one of the things I was considering using.
At least I have a couple of ideas to have a go at and see what takes my liking.
I am after dried and fresh blood looks so a combination may be in the offering.

Been a while but I've managed to progress a bit further

As you can see the base has a coat of sand and I've set in place a couple of figures and some rocks. I left out one of the figures I had painted as it looked a bit too much, that is, when the Mumak and the other riders are added.
It took an nage to get the plinth sorted as I couldn't get one made. I ended up buying a router and making my own. This one was an old piece of kitchen worktop.
The colour of it was a problem as with the varnish and I ended up settling for a few coats of scorched brown and some Purity seal to give a slight sheen to it.
The rocks I am pleased with as I wanted a darker look.

Next up is several layers of scatter and grass to finish the base

It's nice to see it finally start to come together. I'm really looking forwards to see it all done.
Have you painted the sand? Will the mumak be removable, and thus still usable for gaming?

Dwarf Lord - I haven't painted the sand yet, it will get some light drybrushing to tone it down a bit as it is too dark at present.
The Mumak won't be removable as this is a display peice and I dont engage in the gaming side, I must admit my interest is the hobby.
Unfortunately time and other things are against any rapid progress, there is always something - such is life, but this will be finished - I've come too far to stop and anyway, I'm loving it.
