Cheers, appreciated.

Two months of silence.. well, that has been worse I suppose. Pretty much finished Thranduil, but haven't based him yet. Have finished another two comp entries, who'll also be part of (or may at some point be allied into) the Mirkwood army.

Finished both in a single afternoon each, so pretty pleased with how they turned out. Could have spend more time on especially Tauriel, but with the limited time I've got to paint, I better make every minute count and aim at a bit of efficiency as well.

Ursine-Beorn is the Reaper Miniatures 'Dire Bear' figure - a hefty chunk of metal, and one angry bear for sure.

Nice, I like them. I think Beorn's fur has a good level of depth to it which I find difficult with black.

I agree, black is tricky but you have good contrast.

Awesome painting! Tauriel looks very well painted, and I love the bear! Very fitting for Beorn in bear form indeed. I should get my hands on one of them..
The head does look a little big in the pictures, though? Never noticed this before.

Gotta love the bases too. :)

Thanks guys.

Wasn't looking forward to painting the big black area, but the Monthly Challenge finally made me start (and finish) him. Mostly some grey drybrushing (beige on his front) and enough black wash to drown a Hobbit in. Loving my Vallejo Glaze Medium.
His head is a bit big yeah, but don't say it to his (massive) face, he's quite sensitive on the topic. (Which could result in him changing into a big bear and ripping you apart - assuming you're a 28mm model.)

Took a few new shots of Tauriel, flash photography didn't really suit her. The truth is somewhere in the middle...

And while I was at it, WIP Thranduil:

You are starting to get some nice transition to your painting, the purple in Thranduils cloak is a good example. Some dark red glazes in the shadows will help this pop a little more and give it a hint of warmth.
The glaze medium is the one I use, it does help with blending and when you thin paints, it helps keep the pigments together so you get a smoother finish.
Try making Tauriels face as light as Thranduils, it's a little dark for a female.

Thanks Gandlaf, always appreciate your comments - and indeed that you take to time to reply to all the topics in such a detailed manner.

Time for yet another conversion - needed something for the painting challenge, so looked around and made something of what I had. Mostly Elves, Dwarves, Eagles, more Elves and some historical figures - which, at least, tended to be human - so mostly used various parts from those.

Original figure:

And the result: intended to represent a Rohan King's Huntsman. Added chainmail, a hunting horn and a proper amount of hair to make him more Rohirrim.

Very nice conversion mate and a left hander to boot, if memory serves there isn't too many out there.
I've been looking for things to find and there isn't anything obvious to me. I note the pose is slightly looking down, how about having him in a tree ? You don't need a full tree just a couple of branches to represent it.

Very original conversion, dynamic pose and very unique indeed (kneeling, left handed). Love it!

Huntsman is nearing completion, threw some paint on him and then.. sort of forgot about it. Should finish him soon.

Did a slightly Middle-earthy figure in the meantime. Bit more proper painting, not constrained by armies and their colourschemes or anything. Mini is Hasslefree Miniatures 'Luna', who does seem to be carrying Orcrist. Definitely some of the best painting I've ever done; hopefully I can keep it up with my White Council entry for the OR comp.

Well, he is the King's Huntsman, and one of the few lefties in the entire game is in fact the king of Rohan, Théoden himself. Figured a left-handed archer doesn't make much of a difference, while a left-handed warrior with sword and shield would just disrupt the shieldwall, hence this guy was trained in the art of archery instead. Couldn't put him up on a tree though, would give just a bit too much of an advantage in the game! I think I'll have him hunting rabbits instead, or simply position him on a bit of a hill.

Beginning (and, I suppose, half-way point) of my White Council army. Gandalf obviously not finished yet, others pretty much are. Not entirely sure what way to go with the bases, but something Dol Guldur-esque seems interesting. Future additions should include Radagast, Galadriel (possibly both scary and regular), Celeborn.. and also got a Necromancer to oppose them.

Simply stunning! :D
The layering on the cloaks is especially good. The white on Elrond's cloak is stunning, the layering on Gandalf robes is too! Saruman also looks great, though in some places less smooth than on Elrond and Gandalf.
Glorfindel's colour scheme is interesting by the way! I'm not a huge fan of the red with the green robes and cloak, but it's very well painted. His skin looks especially well done, and his sword too.

Also, about your previous update: the Elf looks great! The red/purple cloak is marvelous, and so is the skin.

Amazing work overall! :yay:

Aaaand all done. (Bases sort-of finished, painted some stone tiles on, which from this angle are of course entirely invisible. Will probably redo them when an entire group is finished. Some day.)

Thanks mate, despite Treebeard's best advice I've been a bit hasty, but you know what order of magnitude my backlog is at, so there's no time to get everything up to the desired standard. Seeing how the stuff above was done in about two days, that's not bad though - they still look a lot better than most things I've done in the past. Will get a second Glorfy with additional armour for the actual 'army', this one had to match the greenish hues of my Mirkwood figures - I was thinking of calling him Findilon from now on. On which note, I feel there may be a substantially delayed response to an email in the very near future...

Great work. The faces stand out specifically to me, they have captured the essence of the poses very well. I think Elrond is my favourite. :)

Cheers! :)

After spending some time on historical projects (Dark Age Irish all done now), I painted a bunch of Hobbits and related figures in the past week. Not only useful for the slowly developing Shire army, but they'll also see use as a temporary Frostgrave warband.

All together:

Image

Good ol' Gandalf (wizard in Frostgrave - thaumaturge, with such classics as 'Blinding Light', as well as 'Push' and 'Crumble'..)

Image

Bilbo (apprentice)

Image

Grip/Fang/Wolf (whoever he is - war hound)

Image

Frodo and Sam (thieves)

Image

Image

Infantrymen

Image

Image

Archer

Image

And finally, for the starting warband, a Ranger

Image

Next up: another archer, as well as a militia (treasure hunter) and Pippin (knight) - currently converting the last two. Might squeeze in a dwarf for the monthly competition as well...
