Post subject: | Bag End Build Off ! |
Just been talking to Alan (Dagorlad) this morning and we came up with an idea. Alan has always been into terrain building as many of you will know. My forteit (sort of), has been around building dioramas, so a kind of 'miniature' version terrain. Alan stated that he was thinking of building his own version of Bag End, so I came up with the idea of having a Build Off (meaning, we build the same thing at the same time) and you our loyal members vote the winner at the end. This is all just a bit of fun (but beware, I have a bigger temper than Alan and always hold a grudge, so take that into account when voting in the end). Seriously, I think it will be very interesting to see how 2 people from different sides of the world go about creating the same project. |

What's a "Bag End" ? Oh yeah, I remember, it's that pile of Devlan Mud you built a couple of years ago and called it a "Diorama." This'll be fun! Each week, we'll both post some WIP shots and everyone can see how it's all coming together. Let the Shire Shootout begin! |

Oooh, it'll be just like Scraphead Challenge LotR style! I say go for it. It's always interesting to see the similarities and differences that occur when two people attempt a project with the same brief. Just make sure there is someone on standby to massage any battered and bruised ego's at the end... |

Sorry John, I forgot to add...the Loser has to leave the site forever and post a goodbye message in the 'Face behind the post thread' using an image of him with the loser sign (L) on his forehead. |

Great idea Brian, it will be fantastic to see two admins go head to head. The Dark Side of Alan wrote: What's a "Bag End" ?

As long as we are talking real branding, and not just holding up one hand against their forehead, ala some lame movie that was only saved via the inclusion of a certain Miss Suvari... My only hope is that Brian takes his defeat like a gentleman and doesn't delete my account. On to the model itself; while researching Bag End from the source material, I realised that it's a huge complex with dozens of rooms, much larger than the design that John Howe came up with. He drew a floor plan once in an attempt to identify where the bathroom would be. The finished drawing didn't actually include a bathroom as it turned out, because of the problem of plumbing - how sophisticated were the Hobbits? Well, the opening passage of The Hobbit reads: JRR Tolkien wrote: The tunnel wound on and on, going fairly deep, but not quite straight into the side of the hill and many little round doors opened out of it, first on one side and then on another. Bedrooms, bathrooms, pantries (lots of these), wardrobes, kitchens, dining rooms, all were on the same floor and indeed the same passage.
This is going to be a big model. |

At this point, I'm swilling beer, bet you any amount, he has his tri-square and calculator out. Point to self: when the hell will I have time to start this project Point to self 2: If it looks like El Aussie is winning via WIP pics, DO NOT finish the project, hence...no-one wins Point to self 3: what the hell am I talking about...he never finishes anything he starts and I'll just declare myself the winner |

seems fun, but shouldn't you set a time/size/price limmit? otherwise would it just be a race about who has the least of a live and so the most time to spend on the project |

Nice to see some things never change. I do actually have the plans drawn up for this already, as a part of the Exploring Middle-earth project. But I have a couple of game table commissions to get out of the way before I can make a serious start on Bag End. I'll finish one of them this week I hope and then make a decent start on this project. And I hate to admit it, but Brian is right, I rarely finish anything I start. |

When can we aspect some first pictures of your projects? Knowing either of them that'd be the end of 2011. |

Tijn wrote: Dagorlad, you are not the only one who starts and does not finish projects on this community... Very true. I just admitted a few minutes ago in the Army Help thread that I have never actually finished any army I've started. Although I'm close on a few.
