I am just starting to get fired up again for all things LOTR - spending my evenings painting Lurtz and listening to the movie soundtracks has been very inspiring. Something I've wanted to do since I first started with this hobby was do a Rohirrim village to go with my Edoras Gatehouse model. And so I have started planning out what models I would need to do it justice. I am aiming at doing a village in the Westfold that I can use for various scenarios, so obviously I'll need a few thatched houses. I expect there would be a blacksmith and a stable (at least one) in the village, a watch tower and a palisade wall, and a village hall as a centrepiece. I am using Google Sketchup to design the buildings first because it can be very precise and help to resolve some construction issues early in the piece. The attachment is a picture of my first draft of the Village Hall - it's based on a Viking Longhouse primarily, with a bit of Alan Lee thrown in for good measure. This is pretty much all I'll do in Sketchup, the rest I'll draw on paper. |

It's 'Little Church on the Westfold', kiddin', kiddin'...it's the white walls of the mockup that make it look like that to me. Seriously though, I am really digging the design of the building and those crossed trusses will look really cool with horse heads on them. Cannot wait to see more!! |

I look forward to some more awesome terrrain. For the thatching you go with un-curled natural rope strands, right? |

Yep, it's 'jute' twine, untwisted and straightened. Looks brilliant, but takes an Age to do (and makes a lot of mess too). |

It's great to see you working on a large(ish) scale project again. I'll be following this thread with a lot of interest. Oh, and good luck with the thatching , I'll just stay with the teddy bear fur despite the inferior quality. Ps: Do you have some progress on your son's moria board. |
