I've had the original Gothmog (foot) from the Hosts of the Dark Lord boxed set since that limited release came out...painted him up and converted his crippled arm and was really happy with him. Then the new Gothmog was came out and I was really diggin' the pose, but the head was off and didn't look right. So I picked up the new model and had it just sitting in my drawer forever; finally decided today to do the head swap I have been toying with doing since I got this model.

Just started repainting him and already it looks a ton better than it did before.

Looking good Dave. I can completely understand why you don't like the new models head as much, it just doesn't fit the image of the films quite as well as the original Gothmog. The conversion looks excellently done and I can't wait to see it finished :)

Excellent work! I love your dark painting palette combined with the bright, dry-looking static grass.

Can I just ask if you don't mind, for future reference what colours and method did you use to paint his face and flesh tone its absolutely bang on the money!!!!!!!!!

Thank you guys! :)

The skin tones are basically three different paints in varying combinations...Tanned Flesh, Dwarf Flesh and Elf Flesh. I start with a base of Tanned over the black base coat, then darken with an undiluted Dwarf Flesh. Then it is different combos of the three to add light and dark areas to the head and finally put just a touch of Devlan Mud in some areas.

The plate armor in the photos looks lousy...it is actually much more dulled that what it looks like. I used a base of Codex Grey, washed heavily with Badad Black and then just hit the edges with Boltgun Metal in a very light drybrushing.

Thanks again guys for the comments on Gothmog! :)
Now here is another project that will most likely end up being the Sept painting Challenge model. I finished green stuffing and assembling the Varghulf model that will become my Gulavhar, the Terror of Arnor for my Angmar army. So this is where he'll stand until September.

Didn't Sauron had a servant in the form of a giant bat? Looks awesome. I am going to check the gw site what the original figure looked like.

Ooooh, looking forward to that one Dave!
I always liked the idea of a Varghulf instead of Gulavhar, although my Gulavhar is ready to get a paint, and I was already thinking about him for the monsters category... however, being back into the ent-mood, I'll probably go on with more ents to add in the moot, but I'll see about that in a few weeks ;)

Can't wait to see you starting this one, I love the model! (now my fingers tickle to go to ebay and find a cheap one... (although cheap these days isn't what it's been a few years ago... and I still have plenty of stuff in the backlog...) hmm.. but still... ;)

Thanks much guys! :)
I know what you mean Bart, I was torn between an Ent, an Eagle, a Troll and then I was laying in bed and thought about the conversion possibility and then this guy came to the forefront. So if Monsters win for September this guy get a go, if not, I get to start him early! :)

Well I look forward to seeing him in September if monsters does win, which is highly likely. My entry will (hopefully) be the Buhrdur I was supposed to have painted back in the February challenge :P
