I've gotten back into a routine of painting a little each night after a long absence and thought posting my progress might help keep me motivated. I bought a bunch of Rohirrim and Uruk-Hai and will be posting pictures as I make my way through painting them. First up is Erkenbrand, retired soldier of Rohan brought back to service in the War of the Ring and later made Marshal of the Westmark by King Eomer after the war. He also hates Peter Jackson for leaving him out of the movies and loves the new rules which make him indispensable to Rohan forces. His horse is next up if only I can get a white horse to look right... |

Thanks, it's very easy. The base is Caliban Green (the new version of Dark Angel's Green) and the two highlights are 2:1 Caliban Green and Ushapti Bone (the new version of Bleached Bone) and 1:2 Caliban Green and Ushapti Bone. I mixed them by literally pouring two pots of one and one pot of the other into a larger glass pot, since I plan on painting up a bunch of Rohirrim and using these shades for the heroes and Royal Guard greens. |

The Rohirrim do in fact seem a little jolly don't they? Lots of red and green will have a hard time avoiding a Christmas theme. I could base them on snow I suppose... Next up are a company of the fighting Uruk-Hai. There is an eighth out of frame to the right, but I screwed up the photo. The Uruk-Hai wrote: We are the Uruk-hai: we do not stop the fight for night or day, for fair weather or for storm. We come to kill, by sun or moon. What of the dawn? Very nice Uruk-hai, even if they have lost one. The armour is some of the best Uruk armour I've seen May I also say, how nice it is to find humour included in your posts |

That armour is incredible, great work, it looks even better than GW's. Here's what I do for white horses (you can see pics in my WIP further down the page if you want to know what it looks likes): I started with a Deheb Stone basecoat. Then a 2:1 mix of Deheb Stone:Skull White, followed by a 1:1 mix of Deheb Stone:Skull White, and finally a 1:2 mix of Deheb Stone:Skull White. |

Thank you for the kind words. The armor is pretty straight forward. The Uruk-Hai armor is alternating areas of flat metal (like the shields or the chest plates) and ridges (from the overlapping plates). The first pass is a drybrush of Boltgun metal which picks out the ridges and colors the flat areas. If you look at the shield on the center Uruk-Hai, the shield is just a plain drybrush. The trick is to remove as much paint from the brush as humanly possible and apply a dust of silver over a black undercoat. You want an uneven coat with a lot of the black showing through. After that it's just Chainmail straight along the ridges and spots of Mithril silver along a subset of the ridges. The line down the middle of the shield is (I think) Chainmail but might be Boltgun. If the drybrush goes on too heavy they'll look bright and silver, but a wash of black ink will tone them down and you can try again once it drys. |

Next up are some Riders of Rohan and their dismounted versions. They get paler and dustier cloaks than the nobles. The center infantryman turned out a bit panicked looking, but he's destined to fight Uruk-Hai so maybe that's a sensible reaction... ----- Forces Painted and Ready: Rohan: 129pts Isengard: 80pts |

They look really good! I like the basing. I think, as you said, the middle guy's expression is quite worried but I think it adds a lot of character! It looks like a 'natural' surprise rather than the comical, accidental surprised look that sometimes happens when trying to paint eyes! Really good work! |

The uruks and rohan are awesome. How did you do the white hand on the shields - it looks too neat to be painted freehand? I'm trying to think of a quick way to put white hands on some of my shields. A white hand stamp would be good! |

Nope, just freehand. |
