Hi folks,

We’ve decided to start a work in progress thread to complement the Lord of the Rings campaign thread, which progresses at the steady humming pace of an old ent! This WIP thread will be a look behind the scenes, giving something to see even between the scenarios. This first post is a mix of things, mostly terrain-related. We will also add some figure painting photos later on.

Now… where to begin? Ah, yes – some terrain pieces in various stages of completion. In the foreground, the humble beginnings of the Moria west gate board, now no more than a slab of foam. In the middle, a river tile awaiting for Woodland Scenics’ realistic water. This piece will be used in the Bucklebury Ferry scenario as well as in Ford of Bruinen. Later on, combined with another river tile, it will form the Fords of Isen. In the background, a simple tile with a straight piece of road running through it awaiting yellow grass turf covering.

Image

Next, another tile with a road. All these tiles are 80x90 cm in size, by the way. The green board we've been using for the first scenarios of the campaign is a bit bigger (120x120cm).

Image

Here is the second river tile, also awaiting for a couple of layers of Woodland Scenics realistic water.

Image

In this photo, you can see four barrows and the ruined watchtower of Amon Sûl.

Image

What can we say of this photo, except “Long have I desired to stand upon the shoulders of the kings of old.”

Image

Here you can see plenty of Hirst Arts molds, and some bricks already cast. Lots and lots more are needed for the cities of Pelargir and Osgiliath.
Image

This messy project should produce the boiling and writhing torrent of river Bruinen, known for its foam horses.

Image

These Moria terrain pieces are already ready and await for the intrepid fellowship to tread the long halls and winding stairs. Here is Balin’s tomb:

Image

This is the Durin’s Causeway:

The Bridge is near!

Image

You shall not pass!

Image

Then, just a taster of the figures… these two images show some of our stashed figures, waiting patiently for the gentle touch of a paintbrush…

During the next few weeks we try to finish the first river tile and the Moria gate, as well as the Watcher in (and out of) the water plus some dwarves. The river is needed quite soon in the campaign, and if we can make it, Moria piece (featuring the demise of Óin) will be displayed in the local model show. Look for the work in progress photos here in the meanwhile!

Finally, we gratefully acknowledge our appreciation for the fine work done by member lotrscenerybuilder. His incredible creations have served as an inspiration already for a few years - long before our own campaign became a possibility, let alone a reality.

I am at a loss for words. What praise will suffice? Even if I start extolling every terrain piece, it would still be a disparagement for such amazing work.
I consider myself fortunate to be able to witness the progress of your campaign.

Wow wow wow

I was expecting good, but not that good!

By far the best I've ever seen. Amazing!

How did you do Amon sul?
What materials did you use and how did you make it round?

King Ondoher pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this. You must have either a huge garage or a warehouse or something to build and store this lot.

Wow, thanks for the kind comments! @LordElrond, since I couldn't afford Forge World's Amon Sul, I bought the next best thing:
http://www.ziterdes.de/ziterdes/en/prod ... ubcatID=76

I've just added a couple of statues and done a bit of painting.

@Rognarr, sorry - I do not own a GW store. I'm just a fellow hobbyist, and with my friend we want to retell the story and see where it goes. There's no competition between us; we even alternate playing good and evil. I am fortunate to have enough floorspace to build and store the terrain pieces (well, barely) underneath my model railway benchwork. That, by the way, is another story which I will tell one of these days when the project nudges visbly forward (the focus is now in gaming terrains). But just to tease you, the trains on my layout bear a white tree logo and the proud title "Reunited Kingdom Rail".

Always makes me feel a little better about my own "outta control" collection when I see photos like the last two :) You have some great looking terrain there too, like the Moria themed pieces...

Wow, wow, wow. There is so much inspiriing stuff there.

Do you have a link for where those Kings of Old statues were purchased. I would love to get a pair of those!

I've always been tempted to do a diorama from the Bruin river. Yours looks like a great start!!

The boxes of product that needs to be assembled and painted is quite daunting!

@BrentS, the large scale Argonath were purchased from a Polish company called "Monolith Icon" some two, three years ago. I'm not sure they still carry them, and their web site is somewhat strange these days. But I certainly hope you find what you are looking for. I believe mine will actually become part of the model railway scenery rather than gaming terrain...

Amazing! Quality and quantity! The terrain looks very, very well done. I just love how realistic that river board looks!

Such dedication too! How many people are working on this project?

Oh, how I wish I had an army (of builders) worthy of Mordor! But it's just me, Fëanor, just me. My gaming opponent occasionally helps with planning & ideas, but she has not done any work on the figures or the terrain (apart from setting the board before a game session).
