Hi all, sharing my progress here, as posted on TLA forums too. http://www.thelastalliance.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=6473

As a way back into hobbying after a number of years away, I'm painting up the EFGT set to start with, as a good way of getting to paint a real variety of colours and models from the start. Hopefully I can improve and learn new painting techniques along the way.

These are my first 5 goblins, painted a few weeks ago:

And just finished is my attempt at Balin the dwarf:

Comments and criticism much appreciated! Would really like tips to improve my painting :)

You have done a great job on Balins coat. Red can be tricky to highlight but you've done it well.
My only point is the face seems a bit flat. The dark edging at the hairline is too light and too thick. You want a very thin line at this point with Dark Flesh or similar. The eyebrows nose and cheeks need highlighting further. The eyes look good and these extra touches will help it stand out.

Latest update on this is Dori. Finished this one at the weekend, but have failed to take a decent picture of it since then, hence the wait. Still haven't gotten a particularly good picture, but I'll post it up anyway for C&C and to get me motivated to completing something else... I seem to be going very slowly.

Face needs more work, highlights on the tunic are a bit too harsh, and the metal is pretty poor again - but aside from that I'm pretty happy.

A black wash on the metal will make a big difference. And a brown wash on the tunic will take away that pink look.

A red glaze will probably fix the pinkness of the tunic and also make the highlights look less stark.

For the metal, like Gandlaf said, a black wash will make that chain look much better. A few sharp edge highlights on the bigger parts of the flail and the blade of the sword would make a lot of difference, too.

Liking the goblins a lot so far.

Updates been a long time coming, but here's Grinnah the goblin captain:

Image

Have attempted to improve my photo taking, if nothing else. I'm reasonably happy with him all-in-all.

Hope to get through a few more of Thorin's company next month, will put off doing more goblins for a little while I think.

I can only agree with that. The dark brown shading fits the bill perfectly.

Thanks! I did try to dirty the brown up a bit more compared with my previous attempts where the brown probably came out a bit too light - also edged the base with a darker brown which I think adds to the overall look.

Will go back to the others, change the base edging and possibly alter their brown tones with some darker shading and maybe post a new group-shot.

Group-shot of the goblins so far after a little more shading and re-edging their bases:

Ugly little buggers, aren't they?

Onto some more dwarfs next...

They are amazing. That blue background is much better than the white one for those guys. It really helps them to stand out.

They look nice but to be honest they aren't as good as Grinnah. These seem paler and the shading darker.

Yeah, with Grinnah I used a few more intermediate colour-mixes for the skin to see if I could get a smooth transition through the tones... with the bog standard goblins its a much harsher jump from dark to light on the skin I think, but to be honest with you I don't want to end up spending too much time over the normal goblins, so I'll take some shortcuts where I can ;)

I can agree with that. I never liked painting the original goblins, they were a tedious batch to do.

Hi all, long time no post *again*, sorry! Really need to try and paint more often...

I've just built a lightbox in order to get some new pictures, just out of a box and some aluminium foil looks like this:

Image

Used it to take some better pictures of my old Balin and Dori from ages ago.. look a bit better now. Also touched up Dori's pink clothing, tried to dull down the highlights a bit, think its made an improvement:

Image

Image

And for the actual bit of new stuff to warrant this post, I've finished Fili I think. As usual, not too happy with face or metals, but will do for now as I keep trying to improve:

Up next is Kili, who's almost finished... just needs a few alterations here and there (and actually has a face I'm reasonably happy with), so watch this space...

And heres the long-awaited Kili picture

Image

Don't know why, but the metals look sloppy *again*. Maybe something with me and metallic paint just isn't mixing properly, maybe I should have a bash at NMM instead ;)
