A combi-plog for both the participants of the scenarios from the Scouring of the Shire (SotS) supplement and the Shire army that should rise from that. Have been dreaming of the latter for a while, and recently decided it simply was too fun not to do.

No Hobbits yet though, as the first models painted were the ruffians. A total of 5, enough for the first scenario: Maggot's Farm. They were finished just in time.. and managed to lose quite badly! Not disappointed in their performance though, as I was controlling the hungry hounds at the time. :)

Before showing the miniatures, I'd like to express how very nice these figures are. Wasn't aware of it at first, and only realised it when they were basecoated and could be observed in all their gritty glory. The most excellent bandits, rogues or thieves anyone could wish for, with all kinds of small details and especially fantastic facial expressions.
As usually happens when painting great models, nearly everything worked out just as it should. A pity that didn't hold true for the aftermath, however. When going outside to take some pictures, one of the small guys escaped, and took two others with him, all three losing paint at some extended bits. Very quickly restored it to the best of my abilities (almost made me regret using so many mixed colours) and, more carefully this time, got some new pics just before the sun disappeared. And here they are:

The archer. Bowstring and arrow were added to the model.

One-eye. Not only suffered falling damage, but also had quite some basing material stuck in his apparantly-not-quite-dried-up varnish - was a right pain to remove.

Image

Image

Cleaver. Looks slightly unstable, probably drunk!

Image

Image

Image

Whipping boy. Gash on his forehead was a nasty moldline that seemed tricky to get rid of, so I simply made use of it!

Burly. Cutest of the bunch, just look at that face!

As always, flash photography changed the colour a bit, the group shots below give a better impression of the brightness etc.

Next up: some Hobbits!

Brilliant painting, love the bow strings, I agree with what you say about the sculpts, absolutely some of the best of the entire range, as was the Shire source book.

They're pretty awesome! I think the burly guy is my favourite. The colours are great and fitting for the bunch, and individualises each model.

One question: How did you attach the bowstring and what did you make it from?

Hope to see your hobbits soon :-D

These looks utterly gorgeous. I'd love to know how you did the bowstrings too :D

Ah, yes, cool to see them on the web as well! Too bad you managed to bite so many of the Ruffians so badly, but the scenario was great fun! Stupid drunk Ruffian who can't even jump a little wall.. :P

Anyway, as I said before, the painting is top notch: I love the muted colours! And indeed, these models are beautiful, perfect also for generic bandits and outlaws. I should probably get my hands on some as well.

Thanks for sharing and I'm looking forward to see more painted Hobbits!

This is nice - I cannot remember seeing any ruffians for quite some time now (except wandering the streets...)
Burly is a character. I like the painting and the additions to the archer :)

Nice addition to the bowman! The Burly is my favorite one as well. I like the individual color patterns, I am not a fan of one-eyed's blue overcoat though; it seems gaudy.
Getting base material onto the models is indeed an annoyance, I use a toothpick or a pair of cutters to remove it.

Great so see so many nice comments, I guess my love of the models came through in the paintjob reasonably well.
Will take better pictures at some later moment (perhaps get the 6th and last normal sculpt painted as well), especially the vibrancy of the colours is altered quite a bit. Same problem (although to a lesser extent, and less of a problem for them) with the next few, but that's what you get if you want to put the last finishing touches on when the sun starts to disappear...

As for the bowstrings, I'll get a guide up at some point in the hopefully not too distant future. Now that DMS has revealed he is using his wife's hairs to produce convincing dragon saliva, I suppose I can reveal that this method involves human hair as well - although I simply use my own! Not that strange really, after all, the Galadhrim use bows strung with Elven hair...
It's a rather labour-intensive method and quite possibly not the most practical one, but the result is cheap, realistic (perfect thickness) and probably very durable (strong but also flexible, so it will neither bend out of shape nor break). Anyway, that's for later!

First some early WIP shots of two mounted Rangers of the North - one of whom has a nice string on his bow. Horses are from Warlord Games (Pike&Shotte range, available seperately).

As the title indicates, that's not all: I also managed to get the first two Hobbits painted, both of them Shirriffs. While their feathers should be their only characteristic feature, I decided to paint their entire hat uniformly for practical reasons - with a dark hat and bright feather, they should be distinguishable from across the table. Went for natural tones while also making them pretty colourful, but in a realistic fashion. Now just to hope I can find enough interesting combinations for all ~70 of 'em...
Pretty weird to paint these guys while simultaineously working on a 3" tall troll by the way!

The Shirriffs look great - warm, rustic colours.
I like the WIP conversions too!

Wait! This seems to have escaped my attention!

Cool work again Coenus! Very nice to see you've finally started the mounted Rangers, I can't even remember the first time you said you wanted to do that conversion, it must have been years ago!
The Shirrifs are very well painted, I love the colours chosen. The painting is very neat again. :yay:

Looking forward to see the other 65!

Grazie mille, here some pictures of the same models, but with slightly better lightning, which give an improved impression of the colours.

As (possibly) seen in the Hobby Challenge section: more Hobbits!
Only 58 more to paint now...

Group shots (click for larger pics):

And a couple of detailed pictures of Meriadoc, Marshal of the Riddermark (not quite, but he looks the job!) and some of his companions:

They look fantastic buddy! :D Merry obviously stands out for several reasons (not the least his paint job), but all of the Hobbits are painting amazingly well. Very neat!

The flowers really seal the deal, really makes them look like they are defending their beloved Shire.

Wonderful! The paint jobs are very nice and the colors you've chosen work well together. I'm especially impressed with the eyes, which have a tendency to make the mini look like he is surprised (which is why I rarely bother with them!)

Again, magnificent painting. The flowers on the bases are so intriguing.

Really, really cool stuff! I love what you've done with the bases.

Post subject:  Re: Coenus' Scouring of the Shire ~ Painted Hobbits and more

I really like them but I can't help but feel that the skin seems a little flat compared tot he depth in the rest of the mini. I don't know if a thinned wash would help give it more depth or not though so I'm not sure what to suggest.

That aside they really are some nicely painted Hobbits and Ruffians and the bases have some really nice touches on them too.

Cheers

James

Very nice work, particularly on the dappled horse and the leather apron.

Post subject:  Re: Coenus' Scouring of the Shire

About time I posted these - converted several weeks ago, but only had the time for some pictures a few days back.

Two relatively simple conversions, obviously many more to follow.

Militia with double hand-swap (from archer) and a traded head (shirriff with feather removed) to become an archer (with repaired quiver from the same archer as well):

And a shirriff who got the head of the militia above, with a spare dwarven axeblade added to his club to become a big axe. Base model is the first painted Hobbit in this thread, but the altered weapon and changed/turned head really make it quite different. Very pleased with how this simple swap turned out.

Could be quite a while ere the next update...
