I decided to start a new wip thread for this one to get me motivated to complete what is going to be a massive paint job.

Anyway, I have put together a huge urak hai army. Below are pics just of the plastic minis (I have a bunch of metals too). I bought a big lot on ebay cheap. I want to eventually have a massive battle diorama of uruk vs rohan. One day....

So I gotta paint these suckers. I'm going to use just a few basic colours (tin bitz and boltgun metal for the armour, scorched brown for the cloth) to keep the job simple.

However, I want to use 3 skin tones to create a bit of variety. I will definitely use dark flesh as one tone.

My question to you guys is what other paint colours could I use for urak hai skin? I just want single colours that will look good with a heavy black wash.

Any suggestions welcome.

Wormtongue: Even if it is breached, it will take a number beyond reckoning, thousands, to storm the keep.
Saruman: Tens of thousands.
Wormtongue: But, my lord, there is no such force.

Wrong again wormy!

Well, with such a big army, I'd advise first spraying black, then base collors on everything, then spray devlan mud, and finally highlight if you want.

Quite a decent-sized collection of Uruks.

Asmastermanje says, you really want to be batch-painting with them, with fewer colours, though I wouldn't advise spraying a wash over them, just use a brush. My local GW employees have a short guide to batch-painting Uruk-hai of Isengard, if you want me to relay it.

??? are you a GW manager ???

batch painting sounds like a good plan, painting all of them by hand would take forever :?

That certainly does look like an army worthy of both Mordor and Isengard! Look forward to seeing more.

Most impressive, I can only hope my own Isengard Horde will live up to that magnitude O.O So Sauron now has his army worthy of Mordor..... Now just needs a serving whench who can make him a Sandwich worthy of Mordor.....

As for skin tones, I would have recomended Scorched Brown, but you have already decided upon using it for the Leather and clothing.... Hmmm... Maybe a mix of Mechrite Red and Scorched Brown?

They are looking awesome so far. A good colour to add for skintone is Terracotta, as it will be slightly warmer than the dark flesh to help you out. ~Brian

Gothmog - that would be great - can you post it here or do you want me to PM you?

I'll have a go at the different skin colours (mix red/brown and terracotta) and see how they look. I was thinking of something more bluish/grey too as I've seen others do this for orcs and it looked OK.

I've split the army into 3 batches and will work on each batch using a different skin tone, but keeping everything else the same. I sprayed the first batch with black primer which was a good choice (I often prime with white). I've painted the armour on about half of these using tin bitz and then drybrushed with boltgun metal. That worked pretty well and was quick.

I have an Army Painter dark tone dipping shade that I can use for shading. I've used it before on orcs and it works pretty well (it shades and seals), but leaves too glossy a finish. I will likely end up doing a quick brush over of black or devlan mud shade after I've dipped.

I'll post it here if you like, it's not Trademark, the guide was only verbally relayed to me, so it might not be perfectly remembered, but here goes.

1. Undercoat them all black with spray paint.
2. Paint the armour Tin Bitz, the cloth and wood Scortched Brown and the skin Dark Flesh.
3. Drybrush with Boltgun Metal, bestial Brown, leave the skin.
4. Apply a wash of Devlan mud over whole thing. For the rank and file, this is complete.
5. For heroes, banners etc Highlight with Chainmail, Snakebite leather, and mechrite Red for the skin.
6. (namerd heroes and monsters only) - decorate however you want (yes it's a tad vague)
7. Also, in the case of all metals, apply gloss / matt varnish, don't bother on plastics.

Is that okay? And sorry if it appears obvious, but that is how most of the display Uruk-hai are painted.

I did my Uruk-Hai as Doombull Brown, a Devlin Brown Wash, and then Doombull Brown over the raised areas once the wash dries. The final highlight was thin strips of Tuskgor Fur, but that's easy to skip if you're painting them by the dozen.

They're here if you want to see them:

Could you tell us what Doombul and Tuskgor are in old paints?

Dark Flesh and Doombull brown are very close to each other, but Tuskgor doesn't have a direct equivalent. The closest old paint is Tanned Flesh, but Tuskgor is darker and already looks pretty bright over the Doombull. It's basically a redish brown flesh tone. If you wanted to mix some up I'd play around with some Terracotta or Dark Flesh mixed in with Tanned Flesh or Dwarf Flesh.

Part of the problem is I think Tanned Flesh and Terracotta got cut from the line a while back, so it may be hard to come by.

Your uruks look awesome! Great work. I like all your other stuff too - the Rohan look great. I'll post pics of my uruks asap. I'm batch painting 40 (of the 120) now and things are going pretty quickly. I've done all the armour.
