An hour or two per day, for a few weeks now.

Nothing wrong with slow and steady, especially when you are doing a great job, keep it going! I tend to do the same myself, do a little bit and then step back to look at what I've done and either tweak things or put figures on what I've done and get sidetracked for awhile :-)

Take your time and enjoy yourself. Remember, it's not a race. It's a hobby.
There will be frustrating times.
Walk away.
Return when the itch strikes you.
Have fun.

From someone who's been doing this for a long time.

Great work! Always envious of people who have amazing boards like this! One day I should be so lucky! Can't wait to see the progress on this.

I'll add one more thing, if you are making do with a tool vs having the right tool .... do yourself a favor and go buy the right tool. The project I'm working on I had to put on hold because I got tired of having to fix things that weren't quite right because I was making do vs having the right tool for the job. Speaking from personal experience (and language that went with it), razor/x-acto blades are relatively cheap, once they start to get dull put in a new one. Sometimes you want the effect of a dull blade, but when you need a sharp one a dull one just wastes your time.

I began shaping the support fins on the pentagonal tower otherwise known as Middle-Earth's most elaborate tuba.

Big chunk of foam beside the causeway, soon to be ready to carve into rocky goodness.

When waiting for glue and putty to dry, I go back to tinkering with the defending forces. Early days yet.

Very impressive so far, its going to look great once you've painted it up.

This project is still quite a long way from the painting stage.
The physical form has to be done first.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" - Laozi

In this case, there are many small steps yet to complete before the fun of painting, but I'm looking forward to that. I purchased a palette of colours in anticipation.

Edit:
PS - The garden rock pictured in the photo of Rohan miniatures, is used to press texture in to otherwise flat foam wall surfaces. It is a nice rock. Flat is boring. The rock has nice, useful, textured bumps.

Looks great so far! This project is taking shape very nicely and rapidly indeed.
Looking forward to seeing this finished. 8)

Nice progress. Good job using the rock, I've also seen a blogger use a piece of coral to roll over his board to add more texture.

I have some pumice, cracked quartzite and broken bricks that work well. I have tried to find some rocks shapes that will work like rollers. The rolling technique has a lot of promise.

Here is the site using the coral. He use to post on here (Xintao) but hasn't recently. Take some time and look at his game boards, he does excellent work.

Sorry Something Wicked, didn't mean to hijack your thread.

That coral idea looks good. Rolling would be far quicker than pressing a pet rock onto large areas of foam.

I bought a WWII paint set, to get all those earthy browns and greens, a couple of shades of grey primer, and a 'stone effect' house paint to see if that'll work nicely for ground coverage.

Today I cut out the back valley. You can see the socket join for the top half of the tower too.

Maybe this will turn out to be a bad idea, but I have sprayed some expanding foam on to the piece.
Maybe a few of the Gaffer's 'Ome brews with a friend, and hobby projects, should not mix.
It might turn out to be awesome though.
We'll see. :yay:
