Does anyone know where I can buy miniatures from the Roman era 15-28mm? After watching Gladiator and researching quite a bit on the Romans I'm keen on painting up some legionaries... |

Wow, I'd already searched for some stuff before posting here, by typing 'Roman era Miniatures' on Google. Not much of use came up, so I'm impressed. Thanks a lot, I'll have a look at all of these! |

If, after watching Gladiator, you want to do an Early Imperial Roman Army, then you have several options. The poster above (Sorry, but if I go back to look, this browser will erase what I have written. I will make it a point in the future to write down names of other posters I want to reference) has already included a few links to some of the better 28mm miniatures. If you are interested in 15mm, then there is but ONE choice. That is Corvus Belli (for Early Imperial Romans, for other Roman periods, of which there are many, beginning with Early Roman 700BC - 650BC, Tullian/Servian Roman 650BC - 400/350BC, Camillan Roman 400/350BC -275BC, Polybian Roman 275 - 105BC, Marian Roman 105 - 25BC, EAR 25BC - 192AD, Middle Imperial Roman 193 - 324AD, Late Imperial Roman 324 - 425AD*, Patrician Roman 425 - 493BC*) Each period has its own particular manufacturer who is known for the period. Also, there are rules that are suited to playing ancients that are far better than the GW fare. I am NOT referring to DBM(M)MMMM... For that matter either. Might of Arms, Armati, Field of Glory (to be released next year, but I have seen a few games at demos and it looks to be EXCELLENT), and even games such as Hoplon (which doesn't have a very big following, but looks to be a really decent game). They do require that you mount your figures on a frontage that is significantly different than that for LotR SBG or WAB (in 15mm the frontage for heavy infantry is 10mm, at 25/28mm the heavy infantry are mounted on a 15mm frontage. I have my LotR minis based for several of these systems (fortunately, they all use a common basing standard, which happens to be different from WAB/GW standards. Like most things GW does; they tend to go with a standard that is different than the industry. I would really like to figure out a way to have my figures able to be used both individually and massed without them looking weird... anyway... If you want to take a look at some of the various painted lines based in this manner (For DBA, which is the ONLY DBx system worth anything in my opinion) take a look at the Fanaticus Website (I am having trouble getting the URL to work, but the site is at: http//fanaticus.org/DBA/ You will see a link that says either eye candy or galleries, and there you will have a large list of contributor's armies to look at. They all use the basing standard that I mentioned above. it is similar to the WM/WMA basing standards, and many Fanatici use their armies for Warmaster Ancients as well (I have a few Fantasy 15mm armies that i use for Warmaster as well, although I use the Warmaster Ancients rules, as I feel they are better written. I have also found that you can use units of different sizes than 3 stands without affecting the game as well... but I am getting off point... You will find in the fanatici marketplace a link for a miniature manufacturers page that is very thorough, and contains all major manufacturers and most minor ones as well. If you don't mind doing some convertions. Zveda has just come out with a line of Plastic Fantasy miniatures in hard-plastic and 28mm (very much compatible with the LotR minis for those who want some elves of Orcs that look a bit different. Say, for 1st Age gaming or armies). One of the armies is a "Legion of the Damned". It is nothing more than Early Imperial Romans who are undead. It would be relatively easy to put the flesh back upon the bones of the skeletal Romans, and they are some fantastic miniatures. You would then have a Roman army in 28mm that looked the envy of all other miniatures out there (I am absolutely certain that Zveda actually did them as Romans first, and then changed them to skeleton/undead, and they will eventually release the real Romans... But who knows???) I have gone on well long enough here... I hope that this info helps Matthew * Both of these armies are really the beginning of the Early Byzantines, who succeeded the Romans. The "Polybian Romans" are the Romans who fought Hannibal. |
