I am thinking of playing flames of war (part time) and was wondering if it was at all like LOTR SBG or War of THe Ring

Flames of War is a great game, but bears only a little resemblance to the LotR SBG or WotR really, beyond the need to roll dice to determine if you hit and do damage. It's a turn-based game that revolves around squads of troops and units of vehicles moving and shooting and generally the size of the armies involved are larger than a skirmish game. The game architects are ex-GW staff and so they have brought some of their ideas along with them - so it has similarities to 40K and other GW games, but it is original and well thought out.

So the size of the game is bigger than the SBG, but there are no rigid formations that are the hallmark of the WotR. Plus you get to use on-board artillery and air strikes!

That depends on how large army you want.

Flames of war is awesome! I have a 1750 pt late war SS panzergrenadier army and a 1500pt midwar Ostfront Grenadier force.

yea the most common game sizes are 1500,1750,and 2000.The game is divided into three periods that you can play.Early War('39-'41),Mid War('42-'43),and Late War('44-'45).As of now though there aren't any rules for early war.

I used to have several FOW armies, and played it regularly, but became fed up with the low quality of the miniatures. Even their latest sculpts are rubbish.

I then used 6mm for a while, but just gave up WWII gaming completely in June.
