what is the best way to paint sand to get it to have more depth? I mean in terms of making a desert base.

Thanks in advance.

Have never tried it myself but I would think maybe base of kommando khaki drybrushed with bleached bone then heavily washed with gryphon sepia (or however they're spelt). As I said haven't tried it but it might work.

I've been doig this recently. Either use Army Painters Human Flesh spay undercoat for the whole model or undrcoat the sand GW Dwarf Flesh. Then use a dark brown wash, I have used Coat d'arms dark brown wash and brown in wash - no need for any thing else!

I alsolike to add a few small stones when gluing on the sand, these are painted and drybrushed: dark brown > graveyard earth > kommando Khaki > white
