Post subject:  Modular Terrain Question

Hi

I have decided to make some Erebor themed terrain for the fat ones and I was looking through the old Arnor and Khazad-Dum Sourcebooks. What I wanted to ask is what material is used to create the modular terrain pieces like big hills or large formations of woods. Is it hardboard and on top of it polysterene? Or something else I can't think of. I am mostly interested on creating hills with large rock formations and other various elements on them. (If anyone has the Arnor sourcebook I was thinking of making something like the large hill opposite the ruins of Fornost on page 54)
Your help will be really appreciated. And the fat ones will be forever in your debt.

You could use pink or blue foam - they are more expensive than the white expanded polystyrene but are stronger and can be carved/shaped much more accurately and into more difficult and detailed shapes. Do a Google search for suppliers in your area/country. I have used the pink stuff myself.

I don't have the book here  I believe the hills in the books were cork bark. I will look tomorrow when I am at the house in Jonesboro I will have to post late when I get back. I use pine bark because I can get it free. I have to buy cork bark in the pet store. The base can be any kind of scrap. Hard board is fine. If you have to buy some look for MDFB, medium density fiber board, It can be shaped with hand tools if need be. I think it can be more useful than hard board.

With any kind of terrain piece, even hills, make sure you base them with something like 3mm MDF. I helps protect the edges of the model from dents and chips caused by usage over time.

I use 25 or 50mm thick blue styrofoam, which I purchase in 1800 x 600 mm lengths, for all of my larger landscape models and it also makes a good base for castle walls and cliff faces.

Wow, thanks so much for your help!! I appreciate it alot and thank you Dagorlad for your contribution too. I had buit some small tiles but the bases were too thick and it made them look unfitting.

It looks like a combination of cork bark and slate.
