Get some polystyrene foam - the beaded type that protects tv's etcetera if you are on a low budget or if you have more time and want a more resiliant and realistic piece, get either blue or pink foamboard. You can sculpt the shape and size as you desire. The cliff can be made more realistic using pieces of cork and talus embedded in polyfilla/spackle, the paint/drybrush to the desired colour (rocks are not just grey!).
There should be loads of examples on terrain modelling sites especially those for railroad enthusiasts. Finish off with flock/tufts etcetera to represent vegetation and grass.

Here is another guide - there are lots on Youtube so you can see stuff actually being fabricated - just search.

Feanor left a link on this forum (about a month ago) to an excellent article he'd written on making rock faces:

@elliodoc: funny, I was just gonna post my article until I found you already mentioned it!
So yes, I made an article on TLA (I will submit it on this site too at some point). The article can be found here: http://thelastalliance.com/wordpress/wp ... -Faces.pdf
(That way you don't need to look through the post elliodoc referred to.)

Anyway, there are some more excellent articles on making cliffs over on TLA, namely these ones: http://thelastalliance.com/wordpress/wp ... Cliffs.pdf
and
http://thelastalliance.com/wordpress/wp ... lCraft.pdf

Also, a bit simpler technique can be found on this site in the Tomes of Wisdome: kb.php?a=30 . This explains how to make rocks, but you can perfectly well use the same techniques for a larger cliff.

Also, that link from the 3T-studios is very good!

What country are you in? Hobby stores, builders supplies, railway modelling stores - lots of physical locations and a search on internet should throw up a host of others.

Sorry for the late reply, forgot to check this topic.
Good to hear the links helped!

My parents had most of the tools left, although all can be bought at hobby stores.
The roofmate is a bit harder to come by. I was lucky to have gotten it from a friend (who used to work in the construction of buildings). He found some left over pieces and gave them to me.
You can buy the roofmate on the internet though. Just a google search on the name and you'll find some online stores where you can order it. Hobby stores are less likely to have it. Roofmate is fairly expensive to buy though, so an alternative would be to check out some building sites and ask someone if they have anything left.

A family friend is having an extension built and I noticed lots of styrofoam offcuts lying around yesterday. I've already asked if I can have any bits they won't need. I'll post here if there's much and if anybody wants some I'll see what can be done.

I used plaster cast rocks on the most recent cliff face I built. They are cast in plaster from rubber molds and then glued on to the foam. You stick them on like a jig saw puzzle. Here is a picture of the rocks painted.

Here a cliff face finished with flock.
