Post subject:  What should I build next?

Hi everyone, I'm facing a dilemma... I want to build a LOTR-based terrain model but I can't decide on a project.

It has to be something I can achieve in a reasonable amount of time and not be so large I would need to add an extra room in my house to store it. So Isengard, Minas Tirith, Barad Dur, Minas Morgul, Helm's Deep, the Argonath, etc are out.

It can be anything from the books and/or four movies so far, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to drop in a reply here.

Size is an issue, but complexity isn't. I have a few ideas, which I will list below, but if you have any other suggestions I'd be keen to read them.

In no particular order:
  • Elrond's house
  • Bag End
  • Rohan village
  • Corsair's Ship
  • The Prancing Pony
  • A Minas Tirith street
  • Cirith Ungol
  • Tom Bombadil's house

Ooh. I know. How about the Council Room at Elrond's House from An Unexpected Journey? It was too cool with the waterfalls, and with your attention to detail, I think it could be breathtaking.

I would go for Elronds house. It would look absolutely great. Close second is the Prancing Pony since I've never seen a mini of those

I reckon you should build either Elrond's house or a Rohan village 8)

@Fariagorn: Neldoreth did a nice Prancing Pony here

Hi Dags,

I have the mother of all hang overs and feel that something dark and evil is appropriate? Also I have never seen a Cirith Ungol model?

Happy modelling!

I'd love to see the street of Minas Tirith because I am planning on making some of the fortress soon :D

houses on one side and a street in the front.
otherwise a rohan village would also be awesome with your building skils.

Something that you can keep very small, is an underground system of caverns. So, possibilities include a generic Dwarf mine, Shelob's Lair, Goblin Town (from the books), Khazad-dum or Dol Guldur.
These boards are very, very thematic and have a strong ambience I think. Also, if you make several layers (and make stairs that link them), you can make it easier to store.
I got a board like that of a Dwarf mine (you can check out my gallery), it will contain 4 layers and it's about 20" by 20" by 15". Pretty easy to store!

Otherwise, anything out of the ordinary would be cool. So, Bombadil's House, Elrond's House and Cirith Ungol all sound great to me. That is, unless you want to play lots of battles on the board, in which case a Rohan Village might be better.

Looking forward to seeing it take shape anyway! :)

I would go for a small DolGuldur style ruin with a bit of forest around it! But Elrond's counsil would be nice too!

The Prancing Pony

I have been doing more role playing lately. I have been more interested in interiors. Whatever you decide I will look forward to seeing it.

Hi Dags,
Okay, I'll bite.
How about some First Age Elven buildings? The more you do, the less I do and the more Mordor we all get to enjoy! Or I do :)
Cheers, Greg.

Wow, what a response! Thanks everyone for your suggestions and encouragement. I do like the idea of something from Rivendell, so I might start admiring that particular problem. The scenes that were set there in Unexpected Journey were amongst my favourites.

@Greg, are you building Gondolin by any chance?

P'haps, maybe... A bit... Where would one start? Rivendell buildings, maybe?
Information on Gondolin seems to be Secretive; would one be looking at curtain walls and buildings, or just buildings?
I really don't know, over to you Dags.

I would love to see Cirith Ungol! I really would like to play out a scenario with the orc/uruk civil war!

I'm liking the idea of Elrond's house. It would be nice to see some Elven and Rivendell scenery to give me inspiration. I've been thinking off creating a Rivendell battle board for my soon to be Rivendell army, and prepare myself for The Desolation Of Smaug. There's sure to be some more Elven soldiers to come out :D

However, the idea of a Corsair ship is inspiring. I've been planning and collecting supplies to make a ship or two of my own. I was inspired to create them because of the latest Assassins Creed.

But still, I think you should go for Elrond's house. I can imagine him now, sitting back and chilling in his Elven silk and sipping his wine XD

I hope to see your decision, and progress soon 8)

Sipping his wine I assume you mean?
But I really like the idea of Rivendell.

I made a section through 2 Minas Tirith levels, it was one of my earlier dioramas so I plan on recreating a new one but not anytime soon. I constructed it to fit on a shelf 30" wide X 12" depth X 16.5" high, I don't know how much space you have to work with but I think it could be achieved on a smaller base maybe 12"X12"

you should make everything from the grey havens to mount doom and you can use a spare room of mine (or several rooms!)! :D

I'd love to see you making Elrond's house... but... I even more would like to see you taking up the challenge of doing Tom Bombadil's house, just to see your personal ideas on how the house should look, just because it's not in the movies :)
