This is more is providing than asking for help as it is about how I approached building Helm's Deep - but this seemed the most relevant board to post it. Just finished off my Helm's Deep model and did a post on my blog with lots of pictures as well as a description on how I built it

Helm's Deep is one of my favourite builds. You've done a fantastic job on it, very nice work indeed. 8)

Maybe you have some more wip pictures for an article on here?

Sorry. I started it a few years ago, got most done but with a house extension got side tracked from the last bit. But it meant that it was well before I thought about taking photos as I go along for an article to help others

That is just wonderful, do you play battles with it and the other scenery?

Yes, I use the scenery for games -although need to paint up a load of Rohan and Uruk Hai to really use Helm's Deep properly (I have plenty ready to do)

One question, how did you get the wall to curve?

The walls were first made with rings cut out of expanded polystyrene using a hot wire cutter and guided by cardboard templates I had cut out - so 2 templates with polystyrene between. These rings - 5cm thick - where glued on top of each other to get the right height. Then some mounting board (1.5mm thick so sturdy and doesn't crease when gluing round the curve but still pliable enough to bend easily) was cut to size with door holes in and battlements (on the front pieces only for battlements) then glued on. Worked very well in terms of the efefct but the study mounting board also means the soft polystyrene is protected beneath strong cardboard (or DIY filler in the case of the rocks).
