Well current rumour has it that there will be a Battle of Five Armies expansion for the game in 2014, so here's hoping.

The new SBG rulebook does indeed mention WoTR.

Hopefully not, no disrespect meant, I hope they draw it way back and make an optional rules addition that allows you to use units for SBG, and play on a larger scale, easier.

Why? That would be a very bad idea IMO, seeing as the innate mechanics of SBG (especially the Fight and Shoot systems) are horrid in a large game.

How's that? You mean the buckets of dice? Even the other two systems have that. Been experimenting putting my easterlings in blocks with trays for years, its fun. I don't break them from the tray till they hit 50% casualties then they act like skirmishers or join another unit after passing a courage check. Units like Cavalry remain skirmishers/loose and other common sense units like Rangers etc. You can do it without the house rules, it just speeds the game up by shortening the movement phase drastically.

No, the "first you roll In the Way, then you roll To Hit, then you Roll to Kill" system. It's perfectly fine with 20-30 miniatures per army, but at over 50 it already gets quite boring, and with WotR, you frequently have to put 200+ mini's on the table. For me the time is not in the Move Phase, but the Shoot and to a lesser extent the Fight phase. WotR does this so much smoother and more fluent. Magic, too. If you command a minature, how's that going to work with trays? You command the entire tray? Seems a bit overpowered.

I agree, I think the idea of dropping WoTR in favour of a SBG supplement for bigger games would be a horrible move, and would alienate a lot of gamers.
