Post subject:  My armies getting out-of-control?

I just did an inventory of all my painted LOTR troops. I rated troops as foot (such as a warrior, orc, goblin) a critter (bat, warg, spider), mounted (warg rider, cavalry), war machine (trebuchet, bolt thrower), chariot, or monster (Mamuk, Giant Queen, Troll, Ent, Drake). Here is what I came up with:

Update: 12/29/12

HARAD - 322 foot, 66 mounted, 6 monsters
KHAND - 91 foot, 25 mounted, 6 chariots
EASTERLINGS - 251 foot, 40 mounted
MORIA - 135 foot, 100 critter types (spider, Bat, wargs), 10 monsters
ANGMAR - 56 foot, 6 monster types
CORSAIRS - 106 foot, 1 mounted
MORDOR - 844 foot, 75 mounted, 19 monsters, 7 war machines
DUNLAND - 215 foot, 17 mounted
ISENGARD - 721 foot, 1 mounted, 6 war machines (some of Mordor's Warg Riders and Trolls can be swapped here)
Total: 2,741 foot, 225 mounted, 100 critters, 41 monsters, 6 chariots, 13 war machines

ROHAN - 250 foot, 124 mounted
GONDOR - 447 foot, 37 mounted, 6 war machines
DEAD MEN - 66 foot, 13 mounted
ELVES: A) Galadrim - 188 foot, 8 mounted B) Mirkwood - 142 foot C) High Elves - 220 foot, 9 mounted
ENTS - 11 monsters
EAGLES - 1 monster
HOBBITS - 81 foot
DWARVES - 375 foot, 3 war machines
Total: 1,769 foot, 191 mounted, 12 monsters, 9 war machines

BASES - 158 (inf stand), 64 (cav stand)

Have more: I have a large army of Mahud out painting right now. Last to do is my Numenorean and Arnor armies, but with Hobbit stuff coming I'm sure to get more.

ditto. A pic is worth a thousand models. Especially when you have photoshop where you can copy/paste a single model a thousand times into the same picture. :)

 I would be more interesting in see a photo of how you store it.
I have rather large armies myself +200 treemen for one. I had over a hundred painted buildings on shelves in the old game room. I am planing a remodel so I am curious how you handle your storage.

Me too! I spent ages painting mordor, misty mountains and dwarves and have masses of the other armies to paint... Only to hear my army isn't that big after all... (check out my blog for pics)!

Still would be good to see pics as I love being inspired by others :-)

I know, pictures speak louder than words, but then, putting these all on display would be too much work. How about I opene each box and take a picture of the contents, would you all be satisfied with that as proof?

LOL - that sounds familiar! My loft is stacked with boxes filled with figures!
I started to put the painted armies out to take photos and to record what I had - Its up to you, for me I just love seeing a huge, fully painted army....

I am trying to kerb my purchasing - I certainly don't buy from GWS anymore, but eBay... That's a whole different ball game! And soon we will have the Hobbit figures released - time to start saving!!!!

Good luck with your collection and painting :-)

Alright,

It took some time but I took some photos of my minis in their boxes. Sorry, but it would take more time than I have to set them all out and photograph. However, I do use Dragon Painting for much of my stuff, so I have provided links to pages showing the work. For those what asekd about storage, this album shows and explains what I have done.

You can see the album here:

Very nice. Did you have the sheet metal cut for the Paper boxes or is it available from DIYS stores :?:

WOW - now that is impressive! You have such a vast array of figures and all painted - I would imagine you could field some pretty hefty armies and complete some very large scenarios!
Do you get to use them much?
I know I struggle to find people to play against!?

I'm don't know what country you're in, but in the US we have Home Depot (a chain store of big warehouses filled with construction tools & materials). They sell 2' by 1' sheets of sheet metal that I glue down to thin wooden board for rigidity. I store those sheets in plastic tubs, but the storage above works on the same system. I use "rare earth" magnets to attach the miniatures.

Steel sheets are easy to find but expensive. Tin is much cheaper, though isn't carried as widely.

Post subject:  Re: My armies getting out-of-control?

With regards to the storage, my boxes are purchased for $1.00 each at Staples, or I grab them from work when I can find them. Each box is roughly 12"x 17" x 11", but I cut them down to about 4" high. Four inches works for most LOTR figures, but for others, such as Uruk pikemen, I have to increase the height of the box some.

I go to Home Depot for the metal. I pick out a large sheet of Zinc plated metal that is about .5 to 1mm thick, then trace out a 16.9" x 10.9" rectangle, cut it out with metal sheers, then glue the piece inside the box. Since all my figures have rare-earth magnets under them they hold to the metal just fine, and allow me to take them places in the car without worry.

My storage bins come from various container stores. They are made of plastic and are large enough to hold 3 of these boxes inside.

I use this same method to store all my 15mm historical minis too (I have over 30,000 of them).

With regards to gaming, I do not get to use them much. I have tried desperately to get a focused group for gaming. I put up notices on the posting boards at local GW stores, and from that I have about five persons that I game with from time-to-time. However, the gaming is erratic, like once a month, maybe two if I am lucky. The GW store (LA Bunker) does not show a lot of love for War of the Ring, nor the skirmish game (I only play WOTR).

My small group games with usually 1500-2000 points. We recently did the Fall of the Necromancer scenario that was found in a White Dwarf issue. My dream is to do a campaign with the figures using the old SPI game War of the Ring as the campaign map.

Now having seen the Hobbit future release schedule (if it is correct), I am afraid that my collection will probably grow a further 2-3,000 figures. I can say that the releases giive me hope that a 2nd edition of WOTR will be made.

Very cool. :!: I traded away the last of my 15mm. I don't have room for two scales of buildings and terrain.
