Hi all. Simply I have never played war of the ring before and have played very very little sbg. And when I start playing it will be against players than know far less about the rules than I do so there won't be any major flaws in army building simply because we wouldn't know what to exploit or how too anyway. The following is an army list I am painting at the moment. So far I have painted: 4x companies of WOTD including the king and banner. 2x compaines of ROTD 12 WOMT 2x Avenger bolt throwers. These are out of necessity in my list as they are what I have painted to date. Court of the Dead King 4 companies including King and Banner Riders of the Dead 2 companies Minis Tirith Warriors 2 companies including Captain and Banner Minis Tirith Archers 1 Company Avenger Bolt Thrower Avenger Bolt Thrower That takes me to a total of 650 points but I have 10 warriors of Minas Tirth to paint and a captain and banner to complete the first 650 points. I will add another 12 WOMT for 55 points to the existing formations taking it 705. I have 295 point left. Suggestions please! I have Citadel Guard, Faramirs rangers, KODA, and a trebuchet to choose from really. All the named characters.... and of course many more WOMT. |

I'm by no means an expert, but I'd bulk out the infantry formations Warriors of Minas Tirith - 4 Companies with Captain Warriors of Minas Tirith - 4 Companies Court of the Dead King - 4 Companies Riders of the Dead - 2 Companies with Captain Rangers of Ithilien - 4 Companies Faramir That's 990 points and 14 Might. |

Thanks for the reply. I guess you're right in that I really need more basic troops. I'm just a terribly slow painter and get sick of a unit after too long and start working on something else. l I do want to use the avengers for this reason - they are already done. Is it worth having a captain in the ROTD when they are only two companies? I've never played but I would have thought its too many points sunk in too small a unit. I'm not trying to make an uber list or anything obviously so I don't object to the captain being in there. I'm just surprised it was recommended. Cheers |

Cavalry really need to charge, and having a Captain in there means they'll be able to do that more regularly. Besides which, the Riders of the Dead have "We Stand Alone" meaning an Epic Hero can't join their unit. |

Yes. Gondor's strength is good solid mainline troops that are not to expensive, and good solid heroes to lead them. So some more warriors are good, and citadel guard with longbows give a nice ranged attack. Protect your ghosts and most of all, have fun and learn the system by playing Take what you like to see, and worry about better army list after a few fun (and rules page turning) games... |
