Sculpting & Converting Challenge

Welcome to our third Sculpting & Converting Challenge!!!

Info & Rules:

1. A race and/or region are decided upon before each monthly Sculpting & Converting challenge, this two months' being...

DWARVES

In this challenge you have several options to take part:
- Sculpt from scratch (starting with or without armature/metal wire/...)
- Convert an existing Dwarf-miniature (to a new or another character or race/region, to change it's situation, rank, pose, wargear, ...)
- Convert a completely different miniature into a Dwarf

2. To enter the Sculpting & Converting Challenge, the miniature you are converting must not be converted nor painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-converted'.
Re-converting an already converted miniature is NOT allowed!!
When sculpting from scratch, you must picture proof this with your blank armature/metal wire/... aswell as a work-in-progress-picture as valid proof.
All "proof-pictures" MUST either have the announcement-screen of the running challenge in it's background, or contain a small note with the announced theme and date written on.

3. You may join the Sculpting & Converting Challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of your completed work by midnight GMT of March 31st 2013 . WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.
You are allowed to use any sort of sculpting epoxy, aswell as scratchbuild materials (such as metal wire, plasticard, rivets, chains, ...).
You are allowed to use parts from other miniatures (such as weapons, heads, banners, arms, horses, ...).
Your final work must stay UNPAINTED and contain 4 pictures; showing FRONT, BACK, LEFT and RIGHT side.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed sculpts/conversions. Votes should be cast not simply on sculpting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of techniques, artist improvement, originality etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to improve their sculpting skills and to encourage creativity onto their shelves.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months Sculpting & Converting Challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

Good luck to all!

I've changed the pose a bit into a sort of 'ready' pose as oppose to the one from the picture that I was doing...

This is my first time doing a conversion more than giving my dwarves spears (thank you Erebor!) so it isn't very complex. (and sorry for all the pics)

I am using 2 Dwarf warriors and some bits of sprue to make a Vault Warden team.

I hope this proof pic is ok, it is hard to get one next to a PC, but you can just see the title.
Image
I made a frame out of cut up sprue and filled it with GS.
Image
Image
I filed/sanded it down, and altered the warriors axe.
Image
I later went back and added bolts from a roll of GS.
Image
(I got excited and started painting the shield, oops! So I hope that is enough for that guy)

For the spear guy I originally made a frame out of steel wire and was planning on making it bulkier out of GS, but it was too heavy and kept making the model fall over.
I made the spear out of a few bits of sprue, and was going for the "can-opener" 2 prong.
Image
I then added some GS into the joint and glued it to my warrior.
Image
I added more GS and completely failed at hands, so I gave up... they can be giant mail mittens :P
Image
Image
Finished.
Image

So that is my entry, again I am sorry that I got excited and started painting the shield bearer, hopefully I took enough photos before that :) Also the shield is still loose as I wanted to paint the warrior first. When it is on the base the warriors eyes are coincidentally inline with the hole, probably should've measured that, but luckily it worked out ok :)

Gezko, Nice conversion, I particularly like how you made the shield.

Samoht, Murin's shaping up nicely so far. Are you going to have him looking like GW's version or doing your own take ?

SidTheSloth, very nice chainmail, I dont know what the curve effect is called but it looks great.

I am doing my own take on him. He is actually finished and I am sculpting Drar as well so now I will have to two brothers together.

Pics of Drar coming soon.

WIP pic of Drar

Finished shots of the two brothers. Keep in mind that these are NOT the photo's I wish to submit for the final shots. I will do them later.

These are the quickest sculpts I have ever done. That's good considering I have so many others miniatures to attend to.

Hi guys,

Since battling with my studies will soon be finished ... hopefully, here is my entry for this challenges issue.

This time only one figure, two puppets further are goblins I havent finished for last challenge.

Somehow dwarves seem to be less popular than goblins :( Come on, lets have some nice competition.

Is that going to be a mounted Dwarf Silverhand ?

I thought there would be lots of Dwarves too, still the better part of a month to go though.

Yup yup, l'll go for mounted Thorin I guess. There should be some demand for dwarves on ponies so this will be my version of them. Though, since that's my first time sculpting horse/pony, I will make just one and see if it will do. At the end I guess I would like to have mounted Thorin, Dwalin and Bombur.

And yes, three weeks are still plenty of time to do some sculpts/conversions, its just that I don't see so many people joining the competition so late (excluding me :P)

Mounted Thorin sounds great, be nice to see if you could fit the other's in too, I look forward to seeing them and good luck with the pony, its shaping up nicely so far.

Hopefully a few more entries will begin to trickle in as the month goes on.
