I'm gonna be doing Sharku (and hopefully master the macro mode of this new camera).

Looking at your pic again, you don't use flash do you? That's why your models always have a darkness feel to it? And it suits Shagrat of course.

@E-t-b, your Gorbag looks a bit out of focus, hard to pick up details on the upper body. But from what it looks like you've done a good job on the cloth and armour. Is there anyway you can improve Gorbag's skin or face in depth or maybe a clearer picture would help?

Yes, I know, he's unfinished, once I get him done I'll try to get some better pictures, it was cloudy outside, maybe that's why he looks a little dark, same as today :(

I always had a bit of a problem with pictures as well, still trying to figure it out to yield the best results. This is as much as a picture competition than it is a painting competition. Too bad we can't all meet up, like at a Golden Demon comp...

So your Gorbag is still in progress. Good work & keep it going.

I'm gonna try with a piece of paper and a lamp (if I can find it, it's somewhere..)
And yep, as a matter of fact, just uploaded some pics of the progress in my WIP, the pictures look a little better this time, but I messed up the face after trying to paint his eyes.. I'll try to fix it this evening.

Correct, I stay away from using a flash when I take my photos, a flash takes away nearly all the depth to your paint job and also brightens the colors used into something that doesn't even remotely resemble the model in real life. I try to line up my full spectrum light to best capture the color scheme and shading correctly...sometimes that works out well for me. The colors I use are often dark to begin with as I like a more realistic color palette and gives me the look I'm after better than with bright colors; I feel bright colors make the my models look unnatural...even my generic hobbits brightly colored clothing isn't really all that bright. But with all that said I do need to get a better low light 35mm lens for my camera...that should make my pictures a bit brighter, but it won't alter them significantly. :)

This is the closest thing I've got to a mordor orc.

Good luck PoW, I like that orc captain model actually, can't remember if I have him though in my backlog.

@Bilbo, understand what you mean by the realistic tone of look. Maybe a camera that gives you a bit brighter pictures will help in showing off your work more = more votes, :)
But yeah I've realised my error now in using the strong flash from my new camera in taking pictures of miniatures from a few previous challenges. Flash does really change the look of the paint job from what it actually is.

Was so anxious to get this done that I forgot to apply some grass on the base. Took the pics vertically and when I rotated the pics it put like 10 lbs on my Shagrat. I found it a bit difficult to find still references of Shagrat, found none in the design stills of the extended DVD, in the film he only has a few short clips which shows him head to toe, and in these clips he is unnaturally lighted in green (Shelob's lair) or red (Cirith Ungol). Not sure if I'll do a photo retake and add the grass.

Shot in natural sunlight. Still have shadowing problems, doesn't show off the highlights nicely, but it's better than the superimpose pic from my flash.
Well that's my entry, best of luck to the rest of you participating.

Here is my finished Gorbag. I added no grass 'cause I want him to fit with my Goblin army, and there's no grass in Moria as far as I know :)
