Painting Challenge: Theoden!

Image

Hello everyone! Welcome to the thread for the March Painting Challenge!

Rules

1. A miniature is decided upon before each monthly painting challenge, this months' being Theoden. It is not required that you paint this mini, however it is preferred. Originally we were going to agree to a specific sculpt to which everyone would paint, however as everyone seems to want to paint a different sculpt of Theoden, any Theoden will suffice. Here is a list of miniatures you can paint for this months' painting challenge, in order of preference:

* Theoden
* Eomer
* Any other similar looking Rohan Hero (Theodred, Eorl).

2. To enter the painting challenge, the miniature you are painting must not be painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-painted' (unprimed, undercoated or if you are repainting and old miniature - in its' original paint scheme).

3. You may join the painting challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT of March 31st, 2011. WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. In previous painting challenges, the winner and runner-up recieved prizes in the form of gold coins, however with the websites current situation, gold coins are not available to give as prizes, so no prize is available at the moment.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months painting challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

Good luck with those Theodens!

I just snagged a Theoden on ebay, so I'm definitely up for this - I'll get a prepainted shot as soon as he arrives

Here's my (again, very shabby :roll: ) proof pic. I've gotta stop using my phone to take these :lol:
It's the Theoden from the "Defenders of Rohan" box.

I found a black-primed mounted Theoden of the warg attack box somewhere in my backlog, so I'll be doing that one.
Will try to take pics tonight so I can already start, heh... (the earlier the better).
(found that mounted Aragorn aswell, will place him in my sight-line aswell to get a lick of paint in case I get bored of Theo for a bit..)

heres my dodgy proof. I've had this one for years but never painted him becasue I found the mounted version so frustrating to paint with all the little details, this is a good excuse to finally get him done.

Even though I have all the Theoden models to paint except Pellenor Fields, and Rohan is my favourite good army, I think I'll sit this one out. I have a stack of sculpting work to do this month and don't think I'll get time. Maybe towards the end I'll re-evaluate. Good luck everyone.

Theres detail on this guys armour thats ridiculously small so I'm going to paint him like he's usually done but try use a different colour on the red armour details other than metallics.

I only painted the red armour. the rest is grey and white drybrush to help distinguish the detail, its quite handy as it can keep showing through the paint up as far as midtones.

:lol: I thought the chainmail and scalemail was done too. It looks like well done NMM. Great job on the red armour, I always thought that theoden was hard because of it.

Looking very good so far, BizarreWarstar!

Here's my proof (sorry Bart, I just couldn't resist...):

And the first stages done:

Theoden's face and hair is (obviously) painted, plus I've painted the horse's skin and hair. The horse will be white so there's not much to see in this bad light, but there are some light shadows in the recesses.

Great work so far to both of you! Eomers armour looks good and Theodens face is so realistic.

lol
Looking great so far Pasi! Gives me a good idea of how much more effort I need to do to make mine look better this time! :-X :rofl: (although I don't have to fear you this time since winners of last month can't win a second time in a row :P mwaaahahahahahaa! :D )

His face looks really great!
Oh, and so good of you to start with a white undercoat instead of my black one! It took me like an hour to get the horse completely white again!

I'll try to post a wip-shot of mine tonight... to spice up the competition! :-D
