Welcome to Terrain Challenge 1 "The Free Peoples" The theme of the Free Peoples is open to your interpretation. Challenge begins now and closing date for completed entries will be midnight GMT on November 30th 2012 Rules 1. The terrain piece can be up to 9inches square in size. Entries smaller than this are acceptable. If your entry ends up being one or two inches larger than the permitted 9 don't panic I will not be running round with a tape measure checking for exact sizes. The size limit is more of a guideline to stop 18inch square Towers of Orthanc being entered alongside 5inch square rocky outcrops. Scratch built and pre built pieces are acceptable. Your entry must have provision for miniatures to be used on it after all it is wargaming terrain. How you do this for your prefered game system is up to you. If you are unsure as to whether something will be eligible for entry, just post asking or PM me and I will let you know whether or not you may use it. 2. Proof Pics - I understand that taking proof pictures for this type of challenge could prove difficult as a picture of a pile of materials is not much good. Instead 3 Work in progress pictures MUST be submitted at some point through the challenge. You can submit these 3 pictures along with your completed entry pictures at the end of the challenge if you so wish or at any point up to that. When you submit them is up to you. 3. You may join the challenge at any time, but must submit photographs of your completed piece by midnight GMT of November 30th, 2012. There is no limit to the maximum amount of WIP pictures you can submit the more the better. A maximum of 5 photos of your completed entry please, this allows for pictures of your completed terrain piece from multiple angles. 4. Entries that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed entries. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, attention to detail, and techniques. Good luck to all and above all Have fun!!!! NOTE - With November being Hobbit month for anyone who has not already commeced work on an entry it might be fun to construct something based around hobbits. Oh and p.s - this thread is a furby free zone please. |

9 inches by 9 inches by how tall? Not being facetious, just asking for clarification. That size limit kind of rules my grand designs out... But on the positive side, no blasted furry pests. |

Thanks DMS. 9 inches by 9 inches... something bijou. That suggests hobbits but could be a corner or section of some other well known place/location/structure. |

Is the scale restricted to the current SBG/WotR models or is it possible to enter stuff for, say, Battle of the Five Armies, wich is way smaller? |

No scale restriction on the models Mac - battle of five armies is fine - clever idea, allows you to fit a lot more terrain into a small area. |

I'd like to be involved in this competition too, but there's not enough hours in the day for me - my day job is insane from October through to December and I'm also trying to get another terrain project up to a reasonable level by the end of this month. Next time though, I'll be in it. |

Quote: The theme of the Free Peoples is open to your interpretation. The orcs are free to loot and pillage I am not sure of what I want to do I have several projects under way. Most involve mountains and caves or Mirkwood. Don't need any more Hobbit houses. I will figure something out I cut this out today to fit a 9"X9" I am afraid this batch of materials may end up Hi jacked by Goblin Town |

Where do you get all those huge pieces of bark? I have trees everywhere on my property (pretty big ones) but I can never find good bark like that |

We have some REALLY big pine trees and can extract some good size pieces, but I don't know if I'd ever get some like that to come off even on a recently fallen tree. I've always been nervous about the long term staying power of bark though. Smaller pieces for highlights on terrain I can understand, but it seems to become brittle as it really dries. Does a protective coating on it keep them more durable or is it just something with a lifespan of a year or two before it starts to deteriorate? Sorry if this is a silly question...as I've said I've only used it in relatively small amounts at a time. |

Quote: if this is a silly question There are no silly questions. Bark is wood. You can treat it and it should last for years and years. However, if the bark has started to rot it can be a problem. Wood glue or paint will stabilize the bark. |

True. What do you use to treat the larger pieces like that before painting? I'm only experienced with the more slick / shinny products used on furniture class wood. |

Regarding the size... I wanted to ask if something would be valid. 9x9 is 81 sqinches. I have a couple terrain pieces I was starting on that are roughly 14x7 at their widest points, which is 98 sqinches (they curve in a lot for 'natural' contours so it's actually less ). I don't want to complicate the event but is a piece in generally the same square inch foot print ok? |

One of my friends dips bark it in gray house paint. I avoid the flaky or rotten sections. |

Yes that will be fine - like i say I won't be checking the entries with my tape measure With pieces that are not a standard shape then it would be difficult to work out exact sizes. Go for it... |

A very long time ago TheBucklandBrewer wrote: :D It's been a while since I had, when watchnig a picture, the first feeling that pops into my mind and heart is to shrink myself to miniature-size and walk around in your model board! And with this beautiful weather we have right now, I would give just anything to settle myself on the terrace of a pub on those river-banks in your battleboard and watch those idiots fighting and dying a good battle while I sip my cold beer(s) with some One-Ring friends... mmm... lovely! Looking awesome aqan! Can't wait to see it finished!!! Now I can't change your size (you might want to try pishalver, or so i've heard ), but I can try to do the second-best thing. I'll try to build an inn/brewery, complete with terrace for this challenge |
