Does light of the Valar effect a Ringwraith in a unit of orcs , or does the spell only effect the unit not the epic hero on the unit ?

How do you guys play it ?

It only affects the unit. That effect of hurting spirits is only useful under formation marked as Spirits in the Race colomun.

That's a good question. On the one hand it says on pg. 72 in the little grey box that a hero comes under the same effect as his formation when they are targeted by a spell. Since the Ringwraith is a Spirit it could make sense that he would take those extra hits even if his formation aren't spirits.
On the other hand though it says if the target enemy are Spirits you would add the additional hits, but you're not targeting the Wraith you're targeting his formation. So would the Wraith be the only one subject to both the courage penalty AND the extra hits even though the actual target was the orcs? I dunno :P
Guess it just depends on how you interpret it. I could see it either way.

Technical ruling could see it go either way. I would be surprised if the FAQ, when finally released, stated that the wraith takes the hits as this almost guarentees a ringwraith kill every turn.

I was thinking about this a bit more and think about this.

The idea is that the ringwraith will take the hits since both he and his formation are the target of the spell.

But if you ruled this to be the case, then why wouldn't strength from corruption hit other epic heroes? Or the several ruin spells that deal hits to the formation targeted. The latter you could argue because epic heroes don't have defense values, but the former stands.

I think it is fairly obvious these spells aren't supposed to do that.
