Finally got a chance to put brush to mini. Since I started this whole ruckus, I figured I should post a couple WIP shots:

I haven't been too careful with these...I'm just being lazy. They will definitely not be competition-worthy, but they'll look fine on the tabletop.

Looking good John. I didn't realize you were going to tackle both the foot and mounted version. I like it!

Well, I decided to just go ahead and paint both. The mounted one can't count for the competition at the end, because I had already started painting the horse before we started the Paint-Off. So, I'll just paint both, and only enter the foot version in the competition.

Ok - I'm away for the holidays, and I'm not sure if this is the right place to post my final entry images - but here is my entry.

I started off with the Fellowship Gandalf but then came up with the mountain top idea, and so decided the Fellowship model wasn't wind-swept enough, so ended up with a compromise.

Please CLICK images to enlarge.

Stupendous work, Ebob! This is the place to put the final pictures. When it comes time to vote, I'll split-off the topic and create a poll. Anyway, I love the conversion, and the base is perfect. It fits the mini so well!

Heres my start on Saruman. I was gonna paint colours on his cloak so he is closer to the book version of the character but I don't think i'll do that.

Believe me when I say he looks a lot better in real life than he does in these quick snapshots.

Saruman looks FANTASTIC samoht, lovely blending and colour scheme. 8) Would you mind sharing what colours you used?

And Gandalf is just STUNNING eBob! Beautiful painting and superb base - EXCELLENT work! :yay:

@ ebob - that Gandalf looks great. I love the way you could capture his face under the big floppy hat. I'm hopeful that I can do something half as good as that! Of course, the base is totally sweet as well!

@ samoht - wow, I think those robes look great - even on the "quick snapshots". Well done!

Samoht, if those pics don't do Saruman justice, I demand that you ship him to me, right now.......

Very nice shading and color selection! :yay:

Thanks for the encouragment guys :D

@ King Elessar the Uniter, the colours I used were Fortress grey, Chaos black and skull white.

First I would darken down the fortress grey with chaos black to quite a dark grey. Then I kept adding fortess grey to the mix as the highlights progressed. Once I reached pure fortress grey I then added skull white to the fortress grey until the final highlight (which cover quite a lot of the cloths surface) was in pure skull white.

Great entries and wips so far! Good work everyone!

Here is my starting point for painting:

Image

The sword was broken (GW thought he was Isildur's heir or something?) and it was a real pain to fix. Unfortunately I had ordered it from the GW web shop so it would have taken ages to get a replacement.

Here's my proof of life. Painting starts today!

Image

. . . although I don't have any realistic hope of finishing this month. I don't have any varnish or grass / foliage.

This will be my second ever attempt at painting minis (and obviously, photographing them).

I've finally started painting Gandalf. So far I've painted the flesh with Tallarn Flesh then washed it with Ogryn Flesh and reset the colour. I've painted the robes in codex grey/chaos black and then painted the sword with Boltgun metal followed by a wash of Badab Black.

ImageImage

I'm generally following the painting guide from the Fellowship Journey book. But I think I'll follow Erunion's example and use cream for the inner sleeves just to give a little more colour.

I'm going with elves and the long flowing robes. Here's my Elrond Master of Rivendell miniature. I painted the entire thing today. As for proof that I haven't painted it before December, well, I can only say that I hope my topic asking for paint schemes for his a few days ago is enough proof, as I didn't take any photos prior to painting him. Anyway, without further ado, here is Elrond:

I must say, my camera doesn't do the miniature any justice, and it's a shame I didn't get a new one for Christmas.
