Hello fellow painters!

I've been making steady progress with a small Gondorean Army and thought I'd start a WIP to aid motivation and to gain some feedback/tips.

Here are the units I've competed so far:

..and in keeping with the blue theme I've just completed a color test on the first on my rangers:

..and finally I bought an Ent on impulse yesterday which I've just undercoated. Painting this fella will be my reward when I've finished the rangers :)

Here's one final shot of everyone including the unpainted figures:

C & C very welcome!

Sorastro.

That a great army and the painting is fine too! Minas Tirith at the background looks even more awesome!

I like the scheme you used and it fits well with the rangers.

All of your gondorians look quite good. The one thing that clearly lets them down are their shields. The area directly around the trees have gotten a little too much silver on them, especially visible on the knights. Repainting those areas black would be tedious but would make them look a lot better.
The ranger looks really good. The one thing I think could be improved is the weathering. Making it include a large area and several tones would make it look better.

:?

Bright blue is not the best camouflage if one is hiding in woodland.
Although it fits nicely with the smart and very regal-looking theme of the Minas Tirith regulars, I would consider a more rustic look for the rangers with lots of earthy/grassy colours.

While the scheme for the ranger works well with the rest of the army and the mini as a whole works well, it just doesn't fit for the persona of the rangers. I am really liking the amount of well painted figures though. :yay: 8)

Very nice painting there mate! I'm surprised at how much is painting to that high standard.
The ranger scheme looks fine in my opinion, so I'd say stick with it. I'm also looking forward to see what you do with the ent.

Thanks for all the positive comments and suggestions for improvements folks!

Dwarf Lord; I take your point about the shields - I'll have a go at neatening them up tomorrow. I'll also try your suggestion of going a bit further with the weathering.

The rangers seam to have sparked a healthy debate :) I actually wanted them to be a bit more grey-ish in color, and darker too - which I think could work ok as camouflage (especially at night); The blues in most of the pictures seem to have come out a bit brighter than in life (and I may have been a bit heavy-handed with the addition of Mordian Blue). I just wanted to get away from the predictable greens which (understandably) typify the ranger look. I think for the sake of artistic license and thematic uniformity I'll stick with the blue, but I'll try and tone it down a little so it appears less bright.

Thanks again...happy painting!

I can't be bothered to read the comments; but I can say that I love the colour scheme and I think you've done it very well. Great army. 8)

Thanks again for the kind comments folks.

I'm steadily batch painting my way through those rangers which is proving somewhat arduous... I'm dying to paint the ent but am trying to resist until I've finished the troops

Happy painting!

Your doing a very good job of them. Well done.

What do you use for the bases?

The blue scheme for Gondor is probably th best I have seen and works so much better than the GW black - a very hearty well done for that.

That has got me thinking about re-doing mine.

As for the rangers I think you already have it on board to do some work on them to remove / tone down the blue.

I love your armoured Boromir, a little gem in the middle of some fine, fine work. You may want to look at his clothing under the arm though - it appears to have been painted metal.

for borimir maybe make the armour a shade darker its quite light but if you like it then fine
I just think that warriors of minas tirith should be rugged and quite battle worn :)

Thanks for the tips Gandlaf and elessar; The armour doesn't look quite so bright in real life so I'll probably leave it.. I'll certainly attend to Boromir's armpit though (well spotted!).

Cyndra: After coating with modelling sand the bases are just a base coat of Scorched Brown followed with a dry brush of Snakebite Leather then Bleached Bone. I then add some static grass (small blotches of watered down PVA then sprinkle the grass on) and finally I add a few individual leaves using some autumnal leaf litter. which you can see more clearly here:

Now, back to those rangers...
