A good way to decide is to pick a season or terrain type. For instance, if you're looking at a spring season in a grassland type area (say, Rohan), you're going to want to use darker colored earths and bright, vivid static grass. Conversely, if you're going for the more ruined areas in say Mordor, dark browns, greys, and dead looking grass would be a good choice. Using a search engine to find images of appropriate terrain for the season of choice may help you as well.

Hmmm.. imo you might try somthing like "basing them according to where they live..."

Like:

Wood elves and wooden floor (mabye with some nice leaves...)
Mouth of Sauron some nice and dark Mordor base ect.

just my idea though.
Warning If you do this your models wont look unified no more... i.e they will look very
varied... just saying..

Personally I plan on doing my armies with a different basing technique. For example, all my Mordor stuff will have ashen, dead lookinh bases, and all my elves will have very lush looking bases.

I'm thinking about my terrain to be in the Brown Lands, southeast of Lorien and Greenwood, north of Rohan, west of mordor.
Or east of Greenwood, north-west of Dorwinion, south of the Iron Hills... that way i can have my wood-elves and RoME as my main army led by aragorn, gimli, and legolas, with gondor(osg. vets. + knights of dol-amroth) as an ally led by faramir and eowyn. the enemy would be easterling kataphracts, black numenoreans, and orcs led by the mouth of sauron. does that sound realistic and what should I use??
