I’d be grateful for advice on making basic water effects – ie pools and rivers.

I see that several suppliers offer water-effects gel products. For example I see Vallejo do a 200ml product called “still Water” and GW do a 150ml bottle of “citadel water effect”.

I assume that 200ml would make a river that is 60cm long, 7 cm wide and 5mm deep, or a circular pool 16cm across and 1cm deep.

How deep do you need to make it for it to be effective?

How transparent is it? Can you give the illusion of a deep river using only a (relatively) thin application of the stuff?

water effects can be a bit tricky if your not used to using them so if i were u i try and look up some of the totorial vids on woodland scenics even if you dont want to use their products their really good and tell you how to make rivers look deep using only a cm of water effects and some ink.

i also remember a small totorial on using varnish of something similar to make the anduin and it really looks good i'll try and find that link to.

I have used the still water. It is very clear but make sure every thing is dry before you use it. It can trap moisture. Trapped moisture will cause the still water or any water effect to remain cloudy until it drys out. This can take a very long time.

Varnish! simple

The trick is painting an appropriate colour onto the base - light brownish colours for the edges of the river and darker greens and blues for the deep sections.

I use poly-urethane resin for deep water - it's self-levelling, sets rock hard and is like a mirror (equivalent to 100 coats of varnish). Then a few ripples painted on using water effects from Woodland Scenics finishes it off.
