Thanks Crucifer, they actually serve two purposes: they give it quite a cool look and they hide some shoddy greenstuffing I did! The troll's right left arm and hand consists of seperate shoulder, arm, hand and fingers/thumbs, so I was glad I could cover up some of his Franken-troll scars!

Had a bit of a tinker around on my Hill Troll before going to bed:

Image

I added some weathering to his sword and added some ice-lolly armour and staples (which is a shameless rip-off of philoking's work - thanks for the inspiration!).

Image

I also added an Uruk-shield-knuckle-duster, partially inspired by Dwalin and added weathering to his pauldron.

Image

Raided my bitz-supply some more and added a shield to his left shoulder - this time I used dental floss as rope to add some variety in thickness.

Image

Aaand some more wooden armour to protect his derriere.

Now the one problem I have at the moment is that - although fun - this model is slowly becoming a bit too detailed for a simple hill troll. Added to that is the fact that he's slightly larger than the actual Hill Troll Chieftain, Buhrdur, I'm thinking this guy could maybe be a 'Royal Guard'-like figure, or a hill troll equivalent. Maybe I could draft a house-rule profile, I'm guessing he'd have the 'Bodyguard' special rule for sure...

Can I just post tp say how awesome those Hill Trolls are, I was hoping for something good hwen you came asking about bases, some fantastic pieces top to bottom. :yay:

Don't be worried about Buhrdur being shorter than them, Treebeard is shorter than the plastic Ents, Fimbul and his warg are smaller tahn the other hunter orcs and fell wargs, and there's the rididculously undersized goblin captain. So no scale worries. 8)

Thanks for the praise and for reassuring me Gothmog! I suppose they all must have inferiority complexes haha!

Well then consider yourself very flattered, philoking, you did excellent work and I'm just as eager to see yours painted and ready!

Thanks sticky fingersss! :D

So I recently bought the new Great Eagles pack and was AMAZED by the beauty of the sculpts. They are so detailed and just look absolutely gorgeous, I felt I had to honour the effort put into the sculpts by Trish Carden.

The idea of a Gandalf model on a Great Eagle has been discussed in a few threads of late and I really liked the idea so without further ado...

It's not much for the moment but I'm taking it slow coz I really want this to look good! I took the upper half of the Khazad-dum Gandalf and after chopping away most of the top of his head I added the hat from plastic MoM Gandalf. I'm aiming for the look that Gandalf had in the Hobbit and I rewatched the final scenes to try and capture how he's riding the Eagle but unfortunately it's not very clear, so I'm making an educated guess!

Really looking forward to the final product :D

Thanks as ever, Sid! And yeah, don't mention the price haha - if this goes wrong it could be quite an expensive mistake :P

January's White Dwarf, just like Lord Elrond said! Better hurry if you wanna grab one though, I think the new issue's out today :O

Quick update - The majority of the greenstuffing is done and I must say I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out:

It was quite challenging as the proper positioning of the cloak was rather puzzling... Any thoughts or feedback? (Oh and the sculpting is much smoother in RL, don't know why it looks so rough in a few pictures...)

This looks like its going to be a killer model. Really jealous of what you've done here.

Do we ever get to see the troll conversion painted, it look ace.

Great little project, looking forward to seeing this complete! Are there rules for this model to be on the table?

Agree with you too, these great eagles sculpts are really impressive and tempting.

Haha thanks Dan, it's hard work though! And yep, the troll conversions (I have another one on the way that you can just about see in the background of some of the photos of Gandalf) will be painted soon, promise :)

Thanks a lot Thermo! There are no official rules for Gandalf on Gwaihir/Great Eagle but it wouldn't be too hard to knock up a profile - basically Gandalf with a monstrous mount with Gw./Eagle's profile. Afaik there used to be rules about mounts with their own Fate/Will/Might reserves but Idk if they're still viable...

And yes, I might just buy some more, they're fantastic!

Thank you everyone for looking in today. This is my third and final update for today:

Have attached MoM's old Glamdring, his right arm and the beginnings of a left arm... Won't be doing much more for a while, might finish off his left arm tomorrow but need spare parts to finish off the staff and sword!

Great conversion work on Gandalf.
I have a question about the troll: I believe that the seams should have been concealed with greenstuff before making the changes/additions to the troll as it may prove harder to fix these gaps now without endangering the add-ons. (I just caught an amusing typo there before hitting submit. Ass-ons probably would have confused a few people... :))

Hahahaha ass-ons? Are you trying to insinuate that my trolls are lacking in the booty-department, Dorth? ;) :p haha thanks for the hint, the gaps have been sealed and the model primed already and you were right, it was pretty challenging :D ah well, lesson learned!

Okay Guys so I'm sorry, I lied. I couldn't keep my hands off my latest project and he's very nearly finished!

Image

I've done my best to copy the details from the EfGT-Gandalf, like his fingerless gloves and the scabbard for Glamdring and I sculpted my first hand! Plus, I added a scarf that I think looks pretty damn good! I'm really really pleased with how this conversion is coming along and am quite astounded at my progress with green stuff - I really feel confident using it now! :D :D :D :D :D

All that's left now is his staff and his sword belt...
