Thanks guys!
In my opinion this mini is one of the best GW has produced in their LotR range. I just really like it for some reason. So, I wanted to do something special for it and tried NMM for the first time (as well as shading the staff with light-blue glow from the chrystal).
Let me now your thoughts about it.

Rognarr - your moving in the right direction. I've noted the highlights on the fingers and nose and they work great. If anything maybe a touch more shading to the fingers.
Keep up the good work.

First of all: A big thank you, for your support (especially to Gandlaf and Matt, but ofc also to all others as well)! It's always nice to read comments and critique. In fact, that's what keeps the painting engine running! ;)

So, here's some progress on Gandalf the Grey...

Painted his hat (blue as it's described in the book) with strong highlights near the chrystal.
Also painted the robes and tried to set subtile highlights near the sword... but enough talking, have a look:

I think this is probably the best I've seen from you. Wonderful NMM but the overall job is great. The robes are of particular note for me.
The OSL you've tried from the crystal doesn't show up on the photo very well so I can't comment on that.

Inspiring me to try nmm, great work. I agree this sculpt is one of the "special" figures.

Wow.. all those nice comments were a quite pleasant surprise. Especially because it was the first time that I tried a NMM technique.. I'm thinking about using that more frequently now, at least for heroes maybe.

So here's a (final?) update on Gandalf. Not sure if I should add or highlight a few more details. I don't want to ruin it though, so maybe I should leave it as it is?
I tried to give him some special base scenery too, and hope to have succeeded in that... ^^

Let me know what you think, I'm looking forward to your C&C! :)

I think you should leave him. You have done a wonderful job that any more tinkering could ruin it.

You are entering this in the painting competition right? If so leave it as is because it is brilliant :) If not you should do whatever you feel necessary because it is your model and it should look how you want it to :)

Stupendous work!
I love the detail on the belt and the NMM in particular

Great work Rognarr, in particular the belt buckle and texture of the leather.

Wonderful work. I love his hand, sword, robes and face. I think I would have used a spot of ink to bring out the wooden staff and given it a polished sheen. The old brown inks I often used for wood.

The only thing I can think that is wrong about maybe it is in the books he uses his crystal to light the party's way in the Mines of Moria. So perhaps a stone, Mithril and mushrooms not grass tufts on the base, a bone or too or a dwarven bucket.

I can't see him using his crystal outside though perhaps in a dark wooded area so you probably get away with this. Perhaps it's in the hobbit era whilst he is poking about the Shire. Yes, that would work for me :-)

Wow, folks, you are amazing! Thank you all so much!! :)

@Gandlaf: Yeah you are absolutely right. I only know too well the disapointment that follows after failed tinkering... At the end I only gave the beard a few lighter shades, but that's a barely visible update I suppose.

@ElfLover: Yep, he shall be my entry in this competition.. but as I see it will be a tough one once again! ^^

@Azog: Thanks man! THough I have to say I didnt want a polished look for Gandalfs staff. If you have a closer look I tried to give it a raw, wooden look - like in the films. Polished stuff is for Saruman :D
You got me with the chrystal though.. Maybe I should have given him a kind of Moria base. But then again, maybe we can agree on Gandalf just straying around in Mirkwood and being about to enter Dol Guldur? ^^
As a matter of fact.. I simply wanted to have a detailed and more or less unique paintjob for this model, hence the NMM and shining chrystal and such. I hope it doesnt bother you too much ;D

In other news: here's one last photo of the finished mini.

Ah, yes, I was about to ask if you could provide us with a view of his back.
Great work! The nmm looks splendid. I know I wouldn't have the patience to paint it like you did.
I like the base as well, although I'm not too sure about the grass but I can follow your and Azog's reasoning (mirkwood/shire).
