I see. That is some good photo shopping. I would not have known otherwise. :) its always good to have a plan. All too often I just chop minis up and start playing with the bits to get different poses.

Since working on the bachelor thesis is more than time consuming, the hobby has to step back and progress is only very sloooooow.
Nonetheless I found a few hours to paint the third of my four metal berserks today and also started to give him a base (yes, he's the one on the rock). The only problem he has, is that he hungers for battle so much, that he's already drooling blood! ;)

Number 4 is waiting in the background, but he'll have to wait a bit longer I fear..
Let me know what you think :)

Looks great so far. Perhaps add some bushes or sticks or another rock to cover up the slot? :)

Thank you Ama! Yeah, I will definitely add something to the surface of the rock, as I had written I had only just begun with the basing :)
First time that I tried cork, and I am quite happy with the effect!

It does indeed look good Rognarr... what kind of cork did you use?
I have tried that effect before but I don't think the cork was brittle enough...

Thanks Sid!
It was a cork from a champaign bottle I think (Same material as the cork pinboards). I cut a slice off from it and picked pieces out here and there until it resembled a rocky surface. That's it pretty much already.

As I mentioned in his thread already, with his works on the dioramic display for the fellowship the great Bill Ferny inspired me to grab the brush myself and to improve my own one and add details I wasn't talented enough to do or just didn't think of back then in.. 2008? I'm not even completely sure when I painted it ^^

But yeah, here it is in it's new glory! :P Btw.: The dead dwarf has a small pic included of what he looked like before the improvements. I gave his skull nostrils, his bones got shading and highlights (before it was plain Bleached Bone) and I dared to use a little more colour in general (red beard, green cloth). His book is already "improved" in the before pic though, sorry for that)

I would be happy to read what you think about it :)

And finally the piece with minis. Yes I know, some need still to be based.. ><

Looks great except I would advise using the MoM Gimli, finecast FotR Gandalf and three hunters Aragorn 8)
But very well painted :yay:

Thank you ElfLover, also for the advice. :)
As much as I like the pose of the MoM Gimli, as much I dislike the sculpt. His throwing axes are far too big and this ruins the whole model for me. I chose the TTT Gimli instead of FotR for the dynamic pose.
Same reason for Gandalf, this pose just looks less static than the FotR one (which is one of my favourite LotR minis though! And I have it in metal fortunately ^^). I probably replace it with the MoM Gandalf though, when I have him painted someday..
The three hunters pose of Aragorn is nice, thought the hood wouldnt really fit. Also I don't own this mini ^^

A preciousss little something arrived today... The mini might be a bit tinged, but I dont think that's something paint can't cover. Hopefully I get a chance to paint him soon

I'm pleased you showed a before and after shot, it shows how well you are improving. The Lurtz is a valuable piece to have, well done on getting hold of it.

Thank you for your kind words Gandlaf!

In other news: recent events keep me quite busy, so there's little to no progress. However, having a glance at the painting competition, I started painting one of the old metal warg riders which I got cheap at ebay for little money. This guy was in a horrible state though and I don't knwo how one can paint a mini with colour that thick!

I tried to give the warg's fur a striped look at the hind legs, as I had seen in a Weta concept sketch. Hope you like it. It's still WIP so C & C are welcome as usual!

That's looking nice. I don't care for the wargs but you've done a nice job on what was a completely awful paint job.

That little Moria display board really sets the models off. Very atmospheric and inspiring.

Rognarr the Balin's Tomb display looks incredible. Very well done! the blood makes for a nice touch, I think you nailed it. I need to get my butt in gear and finish mine. You have me considering changing the base to black. Mine is grey right now. Excellent work.

The warg is amazing. Way to turn it around with the paint job. I like the the new base for it too.

Thanks guys.. I was a bit overwhelmed when I saw the amount of feedback I got today!

@Gene: Yes I stripped it first.. the layer of paint was so thick, that there was almost no detail left to the mini...

@Sid: You can find closeups of Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli at the first page of this thread. viewtopic.php?f=50&t=24858 I have none of the others though, since they are a few years old already.. maybe I'll add some close ups later though :)

@Bill: Thank you so much. You were the one who inspired me to re-do it after all! Can't wait to see your's finished and I am glad that I could serve with some inspiration! :)

Due to the entry date I had to rush the warg a bit... I'm not entirely happy with it yet and guess I will add or redo some details later..

But for now your C&C is welcome!
